ETS is introducing updates to the TOEFL iBT® test to create a more personalized, accessible, and modern testing experience—while maintaining the academic rigor institutions trust.
TOEFL iBT remains the gold standard in English-language testing—accepted by 100% of universities in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Australia, and over 13,000 institutions globally.
Adaptive Test Design and Modernized Language
Starting January 2026, the Reading and Listening sections will use a multistage adaptive format, adjusting in real time midway through each section based on student performance.
In addition, TOEFL has added question types that reflect the reality of today’s highly collaborative academic environments, where a student’s ability to communicate with their peers is as important as their ability to understand complex lectures and textbooks.
What this means for institutions:
More efficient testing tailored to each student’s ability
Content that reflects real academic scenarios (e.g., group discussions and project work)
Topics designed to reduce cultural bias and improve fairness
Updated Score Scale Aligned with the CEFR
A 1–6 banded score scale will be introduced in January 2026. TOEFL will also report comparable 0 – 120 overall scores during a two-year transition period as students and institutions gain familiarity with the 1 – 6 scale.
Benefits:
More intuitive alignment with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
Easier score interpretation for score users, including admissions teams
Training and resources provided to ensure a smooth integration
Additional Enhancements
Upgraded audio: All test centers will feature custom-designed Koss stereophones
Faster results: Scores delivered within 72 hours or less
Expanded prep: New free and paid prep materials available starting July 2025
Simplified registration: Easier booking for both in-center and at-home testing
