The GRE® Analytical Writing measure and the TOEFL® Writing measure assess different skills, so the scores on the two tests are not comparable.
The TOEFL Writing section does not measure higher levels of thinking and analytical writing. Rather, it emphasizes fundamental writing skills and the ability to organize and convey information from spoken and written text.
TOEFL scores can supplement GRE Analytical Writing scores and help determine if a low GRE Analytical Writing score is due to unfamiliarity with English or the inability to produce and analyze logical arguments.
