If you do NOT have a Slate integration yet, this article is for you!

If you already have a Slate integration, see the Update Guide for Existing Slate Integration article.

TOEFL® Access makes it easy for approved score users to view TOEFL score information sent by ETS. TheTouchless Solution makes it even easier by allowing institutions to automatically import scores directly into Slate with the TOEFL Access API. This document outlines the steps to configure this process within Slate.

There are three steps to configuring the automated import:

1. Add a Slate integration and generate the API Key in TOEFL Access.

2. Add the source format in the Slate Portal.

3. Configure the import in the Slate Portal.

Step 1: Generate API Key in TOEFL Access

TOEFL scores can be imported into Slate using an API call configured as a Source Format. To automatically fetch thedata via API, you will need to add a new Slate integration and generate an API Key in TOEFL Access.

To add a new Slate integration and generate an API Key, follow these instructions:

1. Sign in to TOEFL Access and select Integrations in the sidebar menu to go the Integrations Hub.

2. Select + Add Integration.

4. Select Verify Details and select Submit.

5. Under Finalize Details, copy the API Key by selecting the clipboard icon.

  • Important! Keep the API Key handy for the next step in the integration process.

  • Pro Tip: You can use the clipboard under Actions to copy the API key later.

6. Select Okay to see your new account on the Slate Integration page.

Troubleshooting: If the connection from the TOEFL source formats breaks, the API Key likely expired. To resolve this, generate a new key by following the instructions in the Generate New API Key article.

Step 2: Add Source Format in Slate Portal

If the source format already exists, ignore this step.

To add the TOEFL source format, if needed:

1. Go to the main navigation in the Slate Portal and select Database.

2. Under Import and Data Processing, select Source Format Library.

3. Use Search Library to find the following source formats:

TOEFL Score Data File

Format: Fixed Width > 10/2017

6. Select OK to be redirected to the overview page for the source format.

Step 3: Configuring Import in Slate Portal

The Score Data File automatically fetches score results shared with your institution.

1. Go to the main navigation in the Slate Portal and select Database.

2. Under Import and Data Processing, select Source Formats.

3. Select TOEFL Score Data File (Format: Fixed Width > 10/2017).

4. Select Edit. A pop-up appears.

5. Select the Import Automation tab.

6. Copy the following text:

IMPORTANT! Copy the new URL exactly as shown above. Do NOT add or remove any spaces, characters, or line breaks.

7. Paste the text in the Import Remote Server field.

8. In the HTTP Headers field, add the following tag: <t name="authcode"></t>

9. Between the opening and closing tags, paste the API Key you created in Step 1.

10. By default, all currently valid TOEFL scores released to your institution will be sent during the first fetch. To confirm this option, select Save. If you'd like to override this default, complete the following steps.

Optional: Override the Last Remote Server Fetch

Overriding this value will limit the fetch to new scores since the last import.

1. Select the Override link to the right of the Last Remote Server Fetch (UTC) field.

2. In the pop up, enter the case-sensitive confirmation message and select OK.

3. In the Last Remote Server Fetch (UTC) field, enter the approximate timestamp that the source format should send to TOEFL Access to restrict the data that is retrieved during the first data fetch.

  • Note: The timestamp should be in the UTC timezone in the format: yyyy-MM-ddTHH:mm:ss (for example, 2023-04-05T03:22:30)

4. Select Save.
