TOEFL has an Updated Score Scale

TOEFL iBT updates take effect January 21, 2026. Here's what to know:

  • The 0–120 scale will be replaced by a 1–6 scale, reported in increments of 0.5.

  • The 1-6 score scale is more intuitively aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)

  • In contrast to the 0-120 scale, the 1–6 score scale is consistent across all sections, meaning a score of 5 reflects the same level of proficiency in reading, listening, speaking, or writing.

(Your Institution Name) has an Updated TOEFL Requirement

(Insert key stakeholders/committees) have established an updated minimum score requirement.

  • The updated minimum TOEFL iBT requirement is ___ out of 6. The section score minimums are ___ out of 6 in reading, ___ out of 6 in listening, ___ out of 6 in writing, and ___ out of 6 in speaking.

  • Students who took TOEFL iBT prior to January 21st do not need to retest. Those scores are valid for two years.

  • For tests taken prior to January 21st, 2026, the score requirement is still ___(# of 0-120 score).
