Using Playoff Holes (Extra Holes) for Match Play and Brackets

Updated over 4 months ago

In Match Play and Brackets, it is not uncommon that you might need to use extra holes as a tie-breaker. When using extra holes as the tie-breaker, matches are played until the player (or team) wins a hole and ultimately the match.

Note: This tie-breaking option is not available for 9-hole tournaments or Stroke Play tournaments. You can adjust the leaderboard for Stroke Play tournaments to break ties for playoffs. Click Here to learn more.

Our system provides extensive support for running match play tournaments and extra hole tie breakers. In this article, we will discuss setting up extra holes for single round match play tournaments, brackets tournaments, assigning extra holes, and how to set up default extra holes.

Setting Up Single Round Match Play Tournaments to use Extra Holes:

When setting up your match play tournament, the tie-breaker option must be set to use "Extra Holes."

If the match play tournament is a single round tournament, go to Rounds > Tournaments. Select the tournament to edit and select the tie-breaking method (as shown below).

Setting Up Bracket Tournaments to use Extra Holes:

If this match is part of a bracket tournament, go to Event Menu > Bracket Tournaments > Edit Tournament. Go to the tournament settings for the bracket tournament and make sure the "Extra Holes" tie-breaking method is selected (as shown below).

Note: For net tournaments, players/teams will receive handicap strokes on holes where they received them in the original 18-hole round.

Selecting Extra Holes and Entering Scores:

After selecting the tie-breaking method, follow these instructions to select the playoff holes and enter the scores:

  1. Go to Rounds > Enter Scores.

  2. Expand the scores for the match that is going into playoff holes.

  3. Click "Add Extra Hole."

  4. Select the first extra hole in the dropdown.

  5. Enter scores for the first extra hole.

  6. If there are additional extra holes, repeat steps 3-5.

The sequence below shows the process of selecting extra holes and entering the scores.

The leaderboard will be updated as playoff holes are added (as shown below).

Default Extra Holes for Match Play (Association Only):

Note: If you are not an Association customer and would like this feature enabled, please contact our support team.

In some cases, you may want to predefine the extra holes. A good time to use default extra holes might be when using live scoring or walking scores. This way, the digital scorecards are already set up for extra holes if needed.

To set up default extra holes, follow these instructions:

  1. Go to Round > Round Profile > Tournament and Scoring.

  2. In the Default Extra Holes section, check the box for "Use default extra holes."

  3. Choose the course and type in all the extra holes. In the 'Extra Holes' column, separate the holes by a comma. You can also specify a range (e.g., 7 - 12 for 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12) (as shown below).

  4. If using multiple courses, define the extra holes for all courses using the "Add Another Course" button.

  5. Click "Save."

Now that you have default extra holes, as long as you have set the tournament to use the tie-breaker of "Extra Holes," when you enter scores on the additional holes for a tied match, they will already be displayed.

Follow these instructions to enter scores on the default extra holes:

  1. Go to Rounds > Enter Scores.

  2. Expand the scores for the match that is going into playoff holes. You will now see six predefined holes. If you set only two default holes, those holes will be looped until six holes are shown. For example, if you set the default extra holes of 18 & 1 on the enter scores pages, you will see 18, 1, 18, 1, 18, 1, 18, 1.

  3. Enter scores for the extra hole.

  4. If you need to add additional extra holes, click the button for "Add Extra Holes."

The leaderboard will only show the extra holes that have been played. For example, if you defined six extra holes on the enter scores page and only five extra holes were used during a playoff, only five extra holes will be shown on the leaderboard (as shown below).
