Sometimes the format for a tournament changes throughout an 18-hole round (or 9-hole round) for two-person or four-person team events. For instance, maybe the teams play alternate shot on the front 9 then best ball on the back 9. Or maybe they play scramble on the first 6 holes, alternate shot on the 2nd 6 holes, then both (best 2) balls on the final 6 holes.
These tournaments are often called 666 (6,6,6 or 6/6/6), 333 (3,3,3 or 3/3/3), and 99 (9,9 or 9/9) tournaments. In this article, we will discuss how to set up them up.
Setting Up a 9/9, 6/6/6 or 3/3/3 Tournament:
To set up a 9/9, 6/6/6, or 3/3/3 Tournament, follow these instructions:
Go to Event/League > Event/League Profile > Handicap Settings. In the Course Handicap section, select from one of the two methods for applying handicap strokes to each subset of holes (Allocate strokes for the subset of holes played or allocate strokes based on the full card Stroke Index). For details on both options, Click Here.
Go Rounds > Tournaments > New Tournament.
Select one of the following competitions (For more details on Competition options, Click Here):
Pair/Foursome v. Field
Pair/Foursome v. Flight
Pair v. Pair (1&2 v 3&4)
Team v. Team (1&2 v 3&4)
Team (Pair/Foursome v. Field)
Team (Pair/Foursome v. Flight)
Team (All Pairs/Foursomes v. Field)
Team (All Pairs/Foursomes v. Flight).
Select one of the following Ball options:
9/9 (18-hole tournament with a different format on the front 9 and back 9)
6/6/6 (18-hole tournament with a different format every 6 holes)
3/3/3 (9-hole tournament with a different format every 3 holes)
Select the format and handicapping for every stretch of holes. Advanced Handicapping Options are also available. (Note: automatic tie breaking is not available for this format.)
Enter the tournament format abbreviations (if necessary). The abbreviations will be displayed on the leaderboard column headers to identify the tournaments.
Save the tournament.
β
In the example setup below, a pair v. field 666 tournament is being played where Four-Ball is played on the first 6 holes, alternate shot on the second stretch of 6 holes, and scramble on the final stretch of 6 holes.

To take a close look at how the Course Handicaps are computed and applied, we suggest reviewing the Handicap Analysis.
When viewing the leaderboard, the score for each format will be organized into separate columns with a key above the leaderboard that identifies the format for each column (as shown below).

βImportant Notes:
Match Play: If playing a 9/9 Match Play tournament, the status of the match will continue through both formats. In other words, an 18-hole match will be played using two different formats. If playing a 6/6/6 or 3/3/3/ tournament, each segment (format) will be its own match.
Printing Scorecards: To help distinguish between the formats on the scorecard, we suggest using background colors in the cells (in the Fonts and Colors tab) and merging the scoring line cells in the "Additional Info & Tees" tab. You can also go to Rounds > Community Reports and search for 666, 333, 99 scorecard templates created by others in the user community.
