How can I set up a Jack and Jill Tournament?

Updated over 4 months ago

Q: We run a Jack and Jill tournament Best Ball tournament, where the low score of the two men on the team is combined with the low score of the two women on the team to form the team score on each hole. Can I set that up with Golf Genius?

A: When creating a Jack and Jill Best Ball tournament, we will need to make sure our pairings are organized consistently and have set up the tournament using Advanced Balls.

Creating/Editing Pairings:

When creating or editing your pairing, you will want to ensure that the player position within a pairing group is consistent across all the pairing groups. For example, if your Jack and Jill tournament is two couples (in this example 2 males and 2 females), and the couple will be sitting with their significant other in the same golf car, you can add the players to the pairings as Male, Female, Male, Female (as shown below). This will ensure the Advanced Ball tournament setup works as expected.

Note: The pairings groups can be set up in other arrangments as long as it is consistent for all the pairing groups.

To create your pairings, go to Round > Create Pairings. You will need to decide how to create the pairings, but it might be best to create manual pairings in a case like this. For complete details on creating pairings, Click Here.

Creating Tournaments:

When setting up a tournament, you will use the Advanced Balls option. When creating tournaments with this Advanced ball, we can get very specific and creative with the setup. In order to use the advanced ball option, the competition needs to be foursome v. field, foursome v. flight, team v field, or team v flight competition (as shown below).

Setup Instructions:

  1. Go to Rounds > Tournament > New Tournament.

  2. Select "Stroke Play" as the format.

  3. Select "Foursome v. Field." (Note: This format can be played in flights and teams).

  4. Select "Advanced..." in the Balls dropdown.

  5. Define the "Holes" as needed.

  6. Click Add a Rule.

  7. After clicking on "Add a Rule," many options are presented to you.

    1. Name the Rule

    2. Select the Holes to be used. In the case of a Jack and Jill tournament, check all, as the format will be the same for all holes.

    3. Select the option, "The same ball cannot be counted more than once..."

    4. Select the option, "Identify Balls by player position on the scorecard..."

    5. Set the Rules (as shown below). In the case of this common Jack and Jill setup, our rules will be:

      1. Best 1 of positions 1 & 3

      2. Best 1 of positions 2 & 4

      3. Define if you will be using gross or net ball.

(Note: Make adjustments to the rules based on your pairings. Keep in mind, and as previously mentioned, the player positions within a pairing group need to be consistent across pairing groups for the Advance Ball tournament to work as expected.)

  8. Click "Done."

  9. Enter any points/purse that will be awarded and make any other adjustments to the tournament as necessary.

  10. Save the Tournament.
