Chat Memory lets TrunkText remember things across conversations (how you like your answers and the facts you share about a job), so you're not repeating yourself every time you open a new chat.
You tell it once that you want short answers, or that on this job "the tower" means Building C, and it carries that into your next chat instead of making you say it again.
Quick version
It remembers your preferences (how you like answers) and project facts (details about a specific job).
You build it just by chatting: say "remember…" or "forget…". There's no form to fill out.
Your memory is private to you and you can see and delete everything, anytime.
Business admins control whether it's available. Chat Memory is on by default. On accounts where the Trunk Tools team has turned on chat settings, a business admin can turn it off for everyone or for a single project.
What Chat Memory Is
Normally, every new conversation starts from scratch. TrunkText doesn't recall what you told it last time, so you end up re-explaining the same context over and over.
Chat Memory changes that. It keeps a small, private set of notes about you and your projects, and carries them forward so future answers already have your context.
Two kinds of things get remembered:
Your preferences: how you like answers written: short vs. detailed, tone, units, language. These follow you everywhere.
Project facts: details about a specific job you share in chat: key people, dates, constraints, how the job is set up. These stay with that project.
Once you've saved a preference, answers come back in your style automatically. Here, replies stay short and bulleted because that preference was saved earlier.
How Memories Get Made
You don't fill out a form, and there's no "add memory" button. TrunkText builds its memory naturally, as you chat.
There are three things you can do:
Ask it to remember. Say something like "remember that I prefer short, bulleted answers" or "remember that on this job 'the tower' means Building C." TrunkText saves it and gives you a quick confirmation.
Let it pick things up on its own. It also notices durable preferences you express while chatting, so useful context can get saved even when you don't say the word "remember."
Ask it to forget. Say "forget what I said about the deadline" and the matching note is removed.
Ask it to remember something and it saves the note and confirms, without cluttering the chat.
Saving stays low-key. TrunkText confirms when you ask it to remember or forget something, and it may also briefly confirm a note it saved on its own. You can always open the memory list to see everything it has saved.
Preferences vs. Project Facts
Every memory has a Role that decides how far it reaches. You'll see this as a badge in the memory list.
Role | Reach | What it holds | Examples |
Global | Follows you everywhere | How you like to be helped: answer length, tone, units, language | "Keep answers concise." · "Use feet and inches." |
Project | Stays with one job | Facts about a specific project: people, dates, constraints, setup | "The GC's PM is Dana." · "Phase 2 starts in March." |
Project is the default. Anything about a particular job (its people, dates, access, or setup) is kept as a Project memory, even if it feels general. Only how-you-like-your-answers preferences are Global.
How It Shapes Your Answers
Once something is saved, it works in the background. You don't have to do anything to use it.
Your preferences shape every reply. If you asked for short answers, replies stay short, across all your chats and projects.
Key project facts stay on hand so you don't have to restate them. Longer background details get pulled in when they're relevant to what you're asking.
Saved notes are treated as background, not commands. TrunkText uses your memories to inform answers, but they can't override your current question or the platform's safeguards.
Viewing and Managing Your Memory
You're always in control of what's stored. Open the memory list to see everything TrunkText has saved and remove anything you don't want.
To open it:
In the chat, open the "⋯" (more) menu in the message box.
Choose Memory (the brain icon).
Open the "⋯" menu in the message box and choose Memory.
The Memory window lists every saved item with its Role (Global or Project) and when it was last Updated (newest first). Use Filters to narrow the list.
The Memory window: each saved item with its Role and when it was last updated. Clear this project's memory removes the project facts only.
Clear a whole project with Clear this project's memory. This removes the facts for that project only. Your Global preferences are kept. To remove Global preferences, delete them one at a time from the list.
Note: The memory window is view-and-remove only, with no manual "add" or "edit." To add or change something, just tell TrunkText in chat: "remember…", "forget…", or "update that to…".
Privacy and Limits
Your memory is private to you. It's tied to your own login. No one else on the project can see your memories, and you can't see theirs.
Project facts stay on that project. They aren't shared across your other projects. Only your preferences follow you.
Don't store secrets. Memory is meant for work context. Keep passwords and sensitive personal information out of it.
It's a focused notebook, not a transcript. Each memory is a short note (up to about 500 characters), and TrunkText keeps the set small and relevant, consolidating or replacing older notes rather than piling up everything ever said.
Turning Chat Memory On or Off
Chat Memory is on by default for your business. On accounts where the Trunk Tools team has turned on chat settings, business admins can control it at two levels.
Business level: a business admin can turn Chat Memory off for the whole business. When it is off, no one in any project can use it.
Project level: if the business has Chat Memory on, a business admin can turn it off for a single project. Other projects are not affected.
A project can't turn on Chat Memory if the business has turned it off.
Changes take effect on the next message, including in chats that are already open.
If a business turns Chat Memory off and later turns it back on, each project keeps the setting it had.
For admins: where to find the setting
Note: The Configuration tab only appears on accounts where the Trunk Tools team has turned on chat settings. If you don't see it, contact your CSM.
The same Chat defaults section also controls Web search and Chat sharing.
To change it for your whole business:
Open Business settings and go to the Configuration tab.
Under Chat defaults, turn the Chat memory toggle on or off.
Only business admins can change the business setting.
To change it for one project:
Open Business settings and go to the Projects tab.
Click the project's row, or open its "⋯" menu and choose Project settings.
Under Chat defaults, turn the Chat memory toggle off or on, then click Update.
Only business admins can reach this page, so only business admins can change the project setting.
Not seeing Chat Memory? It's rolled out by your organization. If the Memory option isn't available to you yet, it hasn't been turned on for your account. Reach out to your admin.
