What Are Chat Attachments?
Chat attachments let you drop a file straight into a TrunkText conversation and ask questions about it right away. It's handy for quick, one-off questions, like checking a PDF a sub just emailed you or getting an answer from a photo on a job walk.
Attachments work the same way in TrunkRFI chat.
Chat Attachments vs. Project Documents
A chat attachment is not the same as uploading a document to your project.
Chat attachment — Available only in the conversation where you attached it. TrunkText can read it and answer questions about it there, but it isn't added to your project's documents, isn't searchable, and isn't visible to anyone else browsing the project.
Project document — Permanently added to your project, searchable by everyone with access, and listed in Documents.
Note: If you want a file to be searchable and visible to your team, add it to your project's documents instead of attaching it to a chat. See How Your Documents Get Into Trunk Tools.
What You Can Attach
Supported file types — PDF, JPEG, PNG, GIF, WEBP, plain text, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, CSV/TSV, Outlook email (.msg), Primavera schedules (.xer), and MS Project (.mpp).
Size limit — 100 MB per file, and 100 MB total when attaching more than one file to a single message.
File limit — Up to 10 files per message.
Note: Other file types, such as zip files, CAD drawings, and videos, can't be attached. You'll see the message "That file type isn't supported yet."
How to Attach a File to a Chat
Step 1: Open a Conversation
Start a new chat or open an existing conversation in TrunkText or TrunkRFI.
Step 2: Add Your Files
In the conversation field, click the attach icon, just to the right of the All project docs menu, and choose files from your computer. You can also drag and drop one or more files into the chat.
Step 3: Ask Your Question
Type your question about the file and send your message. TrunkText answers using the attached file in that conversation.
Good to Know
Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files — TrunkText reads the text in these files but not their visual layout, so it can't interpret charts, embedded images, or formatting and colors. PDFs and images don't have this limitation.
Primavera schedules (.xer) — You can attach and view an .xer file, but asking questions about its contents isn't supported yet.
