A 2025 scoping review found that combining conventional antidepressants with classic psychedelics is generally safe and tolerable, with no increased risk of serotonin syndrome and some evidence of symptom improvement. Intensity may be reduced for some individuals but not all. Continuing antidepressants may be reasonable in many real world contexts while stronger randomized data are still needed.
Psilocybin appears to be safe to combine with SSRIs and similar medications, but the experience is often significantly dampened. Effects may be weaker, shorter, or nearly absent. More research is needed, and medical guidance should be sought before combining psychiatric medications with psilocybin.
Major safety risks such as serotonin syndrome are rare with classic psychedelics. The safest approach is for people to continue SSRIs unless advised otherwise by their prescribing clinician. Serotonin syndrome is a medical emergency. Individuals using serotonergic medications should avoid unsupervised psychedelic use and seek urgent care if severe symptoms appear.
