How to Review Documents with Unplex

How Unplex analyzes documents clause by clause or field by field — contract review for legal teams, investment and compliance document review for wealth managers.

Written by Sabina Sokolowski

1. Scope

A document is analyzed section by section — clause by clause in a contract, field by field in a compliance file. Deviations from a defined standard are identified, a risk level is assigned with justification, and alternative language or client-facing text is suggested. Every assessment is tied to a specific location in the document and backed by a named source: statutory provisions, case law, the firm's own playbooks, or PMS/CRM data. No risk score is produced without a stated basis.

2. Analysis Procedure

Recognize: the section type and its position in the document are identified.

Analyze: content is compared against the defined standard and deviations are detected.

Classify: a risk level is assigned.

Justify: the source supporting the assessment is cited.

Suggest: alternative language or drafted text is provided in context.

3. Contract Review (Legal Teams)

Contract review is the original Unplex use case for law firms and in-house legal teams. A contract is analyzed clause by clause, backed by named sources: FedLex provisions, Bundesgericht decisions, or the firm's own playbooks.

  1. Open the contract in Microsoft Word.

  2. Open the Unplex panel from the Word Add-in sidebar.

  3. Select a clause or section to review, or click Review Full Document to analyze all clauses.

  4. Each clause returns: the identified issue, the risk classification, the legal source, and a suggested alternative.

  5. Each suggestion is accepted, modified, or dismissed directly in the document.

3.2 Supported Contract Types

Any Word-based contract is supported. Common cases include supplier and service agreements, NDAs, employment contracts, shareholder agreements, and real estate contracts under Swiss law (OR, ZGB, ArG).

3.3 Firm Playbooks

Where a firm has uploaded internal standards, preferred formulations, or risk thresholds to its workspace, these are applied as the primary reference layer, ahead of statutory sources — ensuring assessments reflect the firm's specific standards rather than generic legal norms.

Question

Answer

Can Unplex review contracts in German?

Yes. German-language contracts are supported natively; analysis and suggestions are returned in the same language as the document.

Does the document leave the firm's environment?

No. Documents remain within the Microsoft 365 tenant. Access is via the SharePoint or OneDrive connection; no copies are retained.

What if no legal source can be found for a clause?

If an assessment cannot be grounded in a named source, no finding is made. The clause is flagged as requiring manual review rather than generating an unsupported opinion.

4. Investment and Compliance Document Review (Wealth Managers)

The same analysis engine is applied against different documents and data sources — connected directly to the firm's Portfolio Management System (PMS) and CRM, instead of or alongside Word.

4.1 Investment Proposal Generation

Given a proposed set of trades, a client-facing rationale is drafted: what is changing, why, how it aligns with the mandate's risk profile and investment guidelines, and the expected cost and risk impact — personalized to the client's language and communication preferences, with before/after allocation charts.

4.2 Due Diligence Memos

A fund prospectus or factsheet is uploaded, and a structured DD memo is produced: strategy assessment, cost analysis, risk flags, and a suitability check against the specific client's profile and existing holdings. Note: for keeping the underlying suitability profile itself current on an ongoing basis, see Keeping Suitability and Investment Profiles Up to Date Automatically.

4.3 Mandate Breach Narratives

When the PMS flags a guideline breach, the compliance narrative for the file is drafted: what happened, why, the risk assessment, and the remediation plan, with the regulatory notification timeline attached.

4.4 Procedure

  1. Open the AI Workspace and select the mandate or client.

  2. Select the task: proposal generation, DD memo, or breach narrative.

  3. Provide the input (proposed trades, uploaded prospectus, or the flagged breach).

  4. Unplex retrieves the relevant mandate, portfolio, and compliance data automatically and drafts the output.

  5. The output is reviewed, edited, and exported as Word/PDF, or structured items (tasks, protocols) are pushed directly to the PMS/CRM.
