How to Research with Sources

How to run source-backed research in Unplex — Swiss legal research for law firms, regulatory and CIO-view research synthesis for wealth managers.

Written by Sabina Sokolowski

1. Scope

A natural-language question returns a structured, citable answer, with a source reference for each key statement that can be clicked through to the original. The open web is never treated as a primary authority; web search provides background context only. The primary source layer is always the firm's own knowledge, followed by licensed or official sources.

2. Source Hierarchy

Sources are checked in the following order:

1. Internal knowledge: playbooks, standard clauses, house views — checked first where uploaded.

2. Primary official sources: statutory law (FedLex) for legal research; regulatory releases (e.g. FINMA circulars) for wealth management.

3. Case law / precedent: Bundesgericht (BGer) decisions and cantonal appellate courts, where applicable.

4. Vetted commentary / research: licensed legal commentary, or custodian and broker research papers.

5. Web context: used for current developments or background only, never cited as authority.

3. Legal Research

Swiss law questions return structured, citable answers backed by FedLex, Bundesgericht decisions, and vetted legal commentary. Each answer includes a clickable source reference; citations can be copied directly into a document.

  1. Open the AI Workspace in the relevant project.

  2. Enter the legal question in natural language — for example, "What are the requirements for valid exclusion of liability under OR Art. 100?"

  3. A structured answer is returned with a source citation for each key statement.

  4. Any citation can be clicked to open the original source directly.

  5. The Note element (Section 3.3) can be used to retain key findings for later steps within the session.

Specificity about legal area and jurisdiction improves precision. Rather than "what are the rules on termination", a query such as "what are the notice period requirements for an indefinite employment contract under Swiss ArG for a senior employee with 8 years of service?" returns a more precise, sourced answer.

The Note element in the AI Workspace functions as a session-scoped scratchpad: key findings can be saved, built upon across research steps, and referenced in follow-up questions. Notes persist for the duration of the session.

Question

Answer

Can Unplex research German or Austrian law?

Unplex is optimized for Swiss law (FedLex, BGer). German and Austrian law research is supported where licensed sources are available; Swiss law coverage is the primary strength.

What happens if no source supports the answer?

If a legal question cannot be answered with a named source, this is stated explicitly rather than generating a speculative answer. This is a hard constraint, not a preference.

Can research results be used in client advice?

Yes. Each finding includes the source reference and the exact provision cited, making it directly usable in client advice, briefs, or internal memos.

4. Regulatory and Research Synthesis (Wealth Managers)

4.1 Regulatory Document Impact Analysis

A new regulatory circular (e.g. FINMA) is uploaded, and Unplex identifies which clauses affect which existing mandates, cross-references the book against the new requirements, and flags impacted portfolios on a dashboard with severity and clause references.

Note: for GwG/FINMA obligations handled as an ongoing, automated workflow rather than a one-time impact analysis, see Compliance Workflows: GwG, BGFA, FIDLEG, and FINMA.

4.2 CIO View Aggregator

Multiple research papers — custodian house views, broker research, macro reports — are uploaded, and Unplex extracts and compares the investment views into a single structured matrix, producing a consolidated view without requiring every source to be read individually.

4.3 Procedure

  1. Open the AI Workspace in the relevant project.

  2. Upload the source document(s) (circular, research papers) or enter the question directly.

  3. A structured answer or comparison matrix is returned with a citation per key point.

  4. For regulatory analysis, the impacted-mandates dashboard is reviewed, with drill-down available on any flagged portfolio.
