1. Overview
Agent Studio is where custom Agents are built inside Unplex. A custom Agent — technically called a Persona — is a pre-configured, reusable Agent: its task, its allowed tools, and its instructions are defined once, under Settings → Agent Personas. Once published, it appears in the firm's agent library; any team member can run it with one click.
A custom Agent turns a recurring task into a reusable, firm-specific tool. Examples: an NDA review agent trained on the firm's preferred clauses, a regulatory research agent scoped to FINMA guidance, or a citation check agent configured for court submissions.
2. Intended Users
Agent Studio is designed for the designated Unplex power user at a firm — typically a senior associate, legal ops lead, or IT-oriented partner. No coding is required; a clear definition of the task to be automated is required.
Note: familiarity with Unplex's built-in Assistants and Agents is recommended first (see Your Daily Workflow with Unplex). Agent Studio is most effective once a specific customization need has been identified.
3. Anatomy of a Custom Agent
A custom Agent is defined by five parts:
Name and description: what the team sees when browsing the agent library. Should be specific enough to select the right agent without documentation — for example, "Reviews supplier agreements under Swiss OR for liability and IP clause deviations."
Reasoning instructions: how the agent should think through the task — what to look for, in what order, and what counts as a finding.
Answer instructions: how the final response should be structured and formatted.
Allowed tools: the specific data sources and actions the agent may use (e.g. document search, FedLex lookup, SharePoint access). An agent can only use what is explicitly enabled here.
Model tier: which underlying model strength is used for the reasoning phase versus the final answer — allowing faster/cheaper models for simple steps and stronger models where judgement matters most.
4. Creating a Custom Agent
Go to Agent Studio from the left navigation, or Settings → Agent Personas.
Click New Agent.
Select a starting point: Blank agent or Start from template. Templates provide pre-built starting points for common legal and wealth management tasks.
Provide a name and description (see Section 3).
Select the tools the agent is allowed to use. Only what the agent actually needs should be enabled — a lean tool list produces faster, more reliable results.
Write the reasoning and answer instructions, defining scope, method, and output format precisely.
Test the agent on a sample task before publishing, and refine the instructions if required.
Click Publish to Library. The agent becomes available to all team members with access to the workspace.
5. Guidance for Effective Agents
Narrow scope over broad scope: an agent performing one task reliably outperforms one attempting many tasks. Separate agents should be built for separate tasks.
Firm knowledge base as primary layer: the standard clause library, risk thresholds, and preferred formulations should be uploaded to the workspace, so agent searches draw on the firm's own material ahead of generic sources.
Task-based naming: "Supplier Agreement Reviewer" is more usable than "Contract Analysis Agent v2."
Periodic review: agent output should be reviewed periodically. Where a pattern in the output does not match expectations, instructions are adjusted and the agent republished.
6. Beyond a Single Custom Agent
A custom Agent built in Agent Studio can also be used as one step inside a larger Workflow — for example, as the analysis step in a multi-step pipeline that also pulls data from a connected system and finishes by generating a document and sending an email. See How Unplex Works: Assistants, Agents, and Workflows for how Agents, specialized Agents, and Workflows fit together.
