X-rays and MRIs for FAI / hip impingement - are they worthwhile?

Updated over a year ago

We totally understand that many people are concerned about MRIs and X-ray findings. However you should know three things.

  1. Nobody on our team is qualified to read X-rays and MRIs.

  2. Your X-rays and MRI's aren't that useful anyway.

Based on a lot of research, MRIs and X-rays show a lot of "abnormalities" that have nothing to do with pain. The problem is, once you get an MRI or X-ray, doctors will often tell you that the "abnormalities" are the definitive cause of pain - even though there's no evidence that's true.

In fact, a huge percentage of people have "serious" abnormalities in their scans and have absolutely zero symptoms and discomfort.

Shane has tons of things "wrong" in his hip MRI (cam impingement, labral tear, subchondral cyst) and Matt has "arthritis" in his hip. Those pathologies do not appear to have an effect on their hips - and research shows that there's no link between imaging findings and pain.
