This article will show how to create a custom shape boundary for your New York Places Data Hub. This is great because once this is implemented, you will have in-depth foot traffic data for a specific location. This can be handy to identify how successful a previous event or festival was.
The New York Places Data Hub allows users to view all available business district analysis data organized by the business improvement district. You'll be able to learn more about the New York Places Data Hub here.
The kinds of data available for reporting are:
Business in your BID
Business categories in your BID
Businesses closing or opening within the past 30 days
NYC 311 Issues
Tax lots
Foot traffic and visit dynamics (coming soon)

Step 1: Draw your shape
In the New York Places Data Hub, we bring foot traffic of your entire BID from Placer.ai. Placer.ai provides the platform with insightful foot traffic data. Placer.ai attains this foot traffic data by collecting geolocation data from mobile devices. This data can be seen in the Foot Traffic section of the Business District Report.
We have heard tremendous feedback from NYC BIDs that having foot traffic data for a specific area would help us understand how successful a special event or festival was. Thus, we are enabling custom shape boundaries!
We need to know your area of interest to give you specific foot traffic information.
It is straightforward to draw your custom boundary. A custom boundary can be drawn in Gingko. You can access and log into your Gingko account by clicking the Gingko card in your Community Hub.
Once logged into Gingko, go to the Map section to draw your shape. This is best done on a desktop browser. We do not recommend drawing your shape on a mobile device.
In the maps section, expand the Area Tool in the upper right corner of the map.
Click New Area button to begin drawing your area of interest. Click on points on the map to draw the specific shape you desire for your BID.
It is important to note that certain types of areas are federally protected, and we cannot report foot traffic data. Those types of areas would be schools and buildings of worship. Please be cognizant of this limitation when you are drawing your new area.
Once drawn to your liking, click Done. Then click Save and title this customer shape as [Your BID Name] - Placer shape.
You can find more information here if you need more help drawing your new area in Gingko.
Step 2: Download your Shape
The next step is to download the area which you have just created. Navigate to the Table section in your Gingko account, select the "Areas" tab and click Download.
The file will be a CSV file containing the exact coordinates of your custom area. This is the perfect type of file we will need to pull in the Place data you want to see!
Step 3: Email your Shape
Once you have your shape downloaded, email it to customersuccess@urbanlogiq.com and ulde@urbanlogiq.com, and we will add these shapes to your New York Places Data Hub!
We recommend starting with and sending 3-4 custom shapes to the UrbanLogiq team.
Do not have Gingko Access?
If you do not have access to Gingko, you can create a temporary account for drawing shapes, this is outlined in the video below.
That's all for now! Log in to the platform and start your analysis! Happy exploring!
