Overview

In this article, we will cover what two-factor authentication is, how you turn it on and which different types you can use.

What is Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)?

Two-Factor Authentication is an electronic authentication method in which the user will have to give multiple pieces of evidence before they can log into their account. It is an extra layer of security during sign-in that requires users to provide their passwords as usual and an additional security code. This makes it significantly harder for unauthorised individuals to gain access to an account.

How do I enable 2FA?

2FA is optional by default for everyone to use on Volunteero. In order to enforce it for your staff user/ volunteers, please go to your settings and then to account security. Here you can turn it on for your staff users and volunteers. See image below.

Once you have out the 2FA requirement on, all the staff and/or volunteers will be prompted to log in again and set up 2FA if they haven't already.

Types 2FA

Users will be prompted to create 2FA using one of two methods:

  • Authenticator app

Commonly used authenticator apps are Microsoft Authenticator and Google Authenticator

  • Text message

You can use your phone number as a method as well. Set up your phone number and when logging in a text message will be sent to your phone. Please fill in the code and log in.
