I’ve never skied or snowboarded before — can I still come?

Absolutely! Our trips are perfect for beginners. We provide all the extras you may need - all bookable in one place, and with some of the best suppliers in the business, e.g. Lesson Instructors!

Do I need to be fit to ski?

You don’t need to be an athlete, but skiing and snowboarding are active sports. A reasonable level of fitness will help you enjoy your time more.

What are ski lessons like?

Beginner lessons are usually in small groups with a qualified instructor. You’ll start on gentle slopes and learn how to stop, turn, and use ski lifts safely, as well as learning how to use the equipment. On your very first day, you won’t use poles, and your instructor will usually start by showing you how to clip in and out, and how to keep your boots comfortable. You’ll then move onto gentle turns on flat slopes or greens. It’s amazing how much you can learn in 3 days of skiing (we provide 3 x 2 hour packages) and by day four, we are sure you’ll be hitting some blue runs!

What if I find skiing too hard?

That’s normal at first — it can take a few days to get the hang of it. Instructors are patient and lessons move at a beginner’s pace. Most people can make their first turns by the end of day one! If you do find it tricky, there is nothing wrong with taking a break. There is so much on offer on a ski holidays, it’s not all about the skiing

  • Adventure activities like zip lines, sledding or bungee jumps

  • Packed event schedule; both at apres and night

  • Fondue at typically french restaurant

  • Live music at mountain meals

  • Spa / Lagoon day visits (a firm favourite!)

  • Snowball fights!

How do I get on the ski lift if I’ve never done it before?

Don’t worry — your instructor will show you. Beginner areas usually have easy lifts (like magic carpets or button lifts) designed for learners. Check out our first racks guide for a chair lift survival checklist though!

What’s the difference between skiing and snowboarding?

Skiing uses two skis (one on each foot), while snowboarding uses one board for both feet. Beginners often find skiing slightly easier to pick up, but both are fun!

Do I need my own helmet?

Helmets are strongly recommended for beginners. You can rent one on the booking page in advance if you don’t have your own.

Will I be holding up better skiers if I’m slow?

Not at all. Resorts have special beginner slopes where everyone is learning. More advanced skiers usually stay on bigger runs, but if you do ski in a mixed ability group everyone is happy to take the slopes at their own pace and meet at the bottom as a group!

How do I know what ski clothes to buy or borrow?

Focus on warm, waterproof outer layers (jacket + trousers), insulated gloves, ski socks, and goggles. You don’t need to buy everything new — borrowing or renting is common for beginners. There is a packing list in our first tracks guide too!

What if I don’t like skiing once I try it?

That’s okay! Resorts have lots of other activities — from après-ski to mountain walks, sledging, spas, and sightseeing.

How do I carry my skis or snowboard?

It can feel awkward at first, but there are easy ways to hold them — your instructor or rep can show you. Most people get the hang of it in a day.

What happens if I fall over?

Falling is part of learning — everyone does it! Your instructor will teach you how to get up safely, and snow is a lot softer than it looks.

Will I be cold all the time?

Not if you dress properly! With good layers, gloves, and socks you’ll stay warm. Skiing itself keeps you moving and generates heat.

Can I still enjoy the holiday if I only ski half days?

Definitely. Many beginners like to ski in the morning and relax in the afternoon. Resorts have cafés, spas, and après-ski to enjoy too.

How do I stop if I’m going too fast?

That’s one of the first things you’ll learn! In skiing it’s called the “snowplough,” and in snowboarding it’s the “heel edge stop.”

What if I don’t know anyone else on the trip?

Don’t worry — beginner lessons are a great way to meet people. Everyone’s in the same boat, learning together. Committees/clubs will also have whatsapp communities set up for people of similar levels or solo travellers to be together!

Are there English-speaking instructors?

Yes — all our instructors are from English-speaking ski schools.

What time do ski lessons usually start?

Beginner lessons normally start mid-morning so you don’t have to rush. You will receive exact timings in your final e-ticket information.
