What is EES, will this affect me?

What is EES

Written by NUCO Travel

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a new automated digital border system used by 29 European countries to track visitors from outside the EU. It replaces traditional passport stamping with a digital profile that records your name, travel document details, fingerprints, and a facial photo.

Will this affect me?

Yes, EES affects you if you travel on a UK passport or from any other non-EU country to the Schengen Area for short stays.

How it impacts your travel:

  • Initial Registration: On your first trip to an EES-participating country, you will need to register your biometrics (a photo and fingerprints) at dedicated booths or kiosks at the border. This digital record is then valid for three years.

  • Longer Wait Times: Because of this data collection process, border crossings may take longer than they used to.

  • Travel to the UK/France: If you are travelling from the UK via the Port of Dover, Eurostar (St Pancras International), or Eurotunnel (Folkestone), EES checks are completed before you leave the UK.

  • The 90/180-Day Rule: The system automatically calculates exactly how long you stay in Europe. You must not exceed the limit of 90 days out of any 180-day period.

  • Where it doesn't apply: EES does not apply if you are an EU citizen, have an EU residency card, or are travelling to the Republic of Ireland or Cyprus.

What you need to do:

You do not need to do anything or register online before you travel. However, you should prepare for potentially longer queues at ports, airports, and train stations.
