When Whippet finishes processing a consult, it can do more than draft your clinical note — it can also write a plain-language client summary letter that explains the consultation in language a pet owner will understand, ready for you to tidy up and hand over or send.

The Client Summary tab open in the editor, showing a plain-language letter to the owner with consult details on the right

Where to find it

Open the consult (see Viewing and navigating a consult). The notes panel has a row of tabs along the top — one per note and per letter — and the client summary appears as its own Client Summary tab, usually to the left of your note tabs. Letters appear once the consult reaches the Summarised stage, so if you don't see the tab, the consult may still be processing.

Editing and saving

The letter opens in an editor with a formatting toolbar: Undo and Redo, Headings, Bold, Italic, Underline, bullet and numbered lists, and a Search & Replace tool. Rewrite anything the owner shouldn't see, soften the wording, or add a personal note, then click Save at the right-hand end of the toolbar. If you see a Failed to save letter message, try Save again.

Your practice letterhead isn't designed on the consult page — it's set up once under your practice's letter settings. See Setting up your letterhead.

Exporting and printing the letter

Save your edits first so the owner gets your final wording, then use the same toolbar:

  • Copy Text — copies the letter as plain text, the quickest route into an email or your practice system.

  • Download .docx — downloads the letter as a Word document, named after the patient and consult date (for example, cooper-2026-05-16-letter.docx).

  • Download .pdf — downloads the letter as a PDF, named the same way.

  • Print — opens your browser's print dialog so you can print or save the letter directly.

For more on getting documents out of Whippet, see Exporting and copying your notes and letters.

If something goes wrong

  • There's no Client Summary tab. The consult may not have finished processing, or a summary letter wasn't generated for this consult. Wait until the consult shows Summarised, then reopen it.

  • The PDF won't download. If you see Could not authorize PDF export or PDF export failed, try Download .pdf again. If it keeps failing, Download .docx is a reliable alternative.

  • The toolbar buttons aren't visible. The letter toolbar — including Save and the export buttons — is only shown on wider screens. Widen your browser window to bring it back.

What this doesn't do (yet)

  • Design your letterhead here. The consult-page letter editor is for editing wording, not layout — there are no table or image-resizing controls. Build your letterhead in letter settings (see Setting up your letterhead).

  • Email the letter for you. Whippet exports, copies, or prints the letter; sending it to the owner is up to you.
