Why it matters
Advanced email options give you more control over how your emails behave. This is useful if you want to use your own Mailgun account, customize sender behavior, or control where replies are received. These settings are optional and typically used when you need more flexibility beyond the default setup.
Key Concepts
Default provider: Whippy-managed email sending using Whippy’s infrastructure and domains.
Custom provider: A setup where you use your own Mailgun account to send emails through Whippy.
Sender address: The email address recipients see in the From field.
Reply routing: Where replies are sent when a customer responds to your email.
via whippymail.com: A label shown in some inboxes when the visible sender address does not match the domain used to send the email.
Step-by-Step: Use Advanced Email Settings
Go to Settings and click Channels.
Select an Email Channel and click Edit.
Open the Channel Sender section.
In Communication Provider, select Custom.
Enter your Email name.
Enter your Base Domain.
Add your Mailgun API Key.
Enter the same value in Webhook Signing Key.
Click Update Channel Sender.
Send a test email to confirm setup.
How Sender Behavior Works
The sender name is based on the user sending the email
The sender address is the configured email in the channel
If these do not align with the sending domain, inboxes may show a warning
Example:
Sender name: John
Sender address: john@yourcompany.com
Sending domain: whippymail.com
This may appear as:
Reply Routing Behavior
If using a Whippy-managed domain, replies return to Whippy
If using a custom sender address linked to an external inbox, replies go to that inbox
If domains are mismatched, replies may not return to Whippy
Tips and Best Practices
Use the default provider unless you need full control over email infrastructure
Keep your sender address and sending domain aligned
Test reply behavior before using advanced setups in campaigns
Use a dedicated domain or subdomain for sending
Avoid mixing external email addresses with Whippy-managed sending unless intentional
Troubleshooting
Issue | Possible Cause | Fix |
“via whippymail.com” appears | Sender address does not match sending domain | Use a matching domain setup |
Replies not returning to Whippy | Emails routed to external inbox | Use a Whippy-managed domain or correct configuration |
Emails appear inconsistent | Sender name and domain mismatch | Align sender settings |
Custom provider not working | Incorrect Mailgun credentials | Verify API key and domain setup |
Replies going to personal inbox | Custom sender address used | Update sender configuration to route through Whippy |
