Use Object Data in Contact Segments

Build dynamic contact audiences using object records linked to contacts.

Written by Maria Cairns

Why it matters

Object data lets teams create audiences from operational information that does not live directly on the contact record. This is useful when outreach depends on appointments, jobs, orders, applications, assignments, locations, or other structured records.

Key Concepts

Object data: Structured records linked to contacts, such as jobs, orders, appointments, or applications.

Contact segment: A dynamic contact audience built from saved filter rules.

Association: The relationship that connects object records to contacts or to another object that eventually links to contacts.

Object condition: A filter rule that uses an object type, object property, or object value.

Data freshness: How current the object record is compared with the source system.

Step-by-Step: Create a segment from object data

  1. Confirm the object records exist under Contacts > Objects.

  2. Confirm the object records are associated with contacts.

  3. Open Contacts from the main sidebar.

  4. Select All contacts.

  5. Open Filter.

  6. Add a condition that uses the relevant object or describe the audience with the AI Filter Builder.

  7. Review the contacts returned by the filter.

  8. Select Save as segment when the object-based audience should be reused.

Tips and Best Practices

  • Test the filter with a contact whose object data you already understand.

  • Use exact object and property names when prompting the AI Filter Builder.

  • Check synced data freshness before using an object-based segment for messaging.

  • Use static lists instead when a point-in-time audience must not change.

Troubleshooting

Issue

Possible Cause

Fix

No contacts match the object filter

The object records are missing, not associated, or do not contain the expected value

Review Contacts > Objects and Settings > Objects, then test with a known contact

The wrong contacts match the segment

The filter uses the wrong object property or association path

Review the filter conditions and object associations

The object field is not available in filtering

The object or property may not be configured for the workspace or available to the user

Review Settings > Objects and the user's permissions
