Understanding Contact Segments in Whippy

Use segments to save dynamic contact audiences based on filters.

Written by Maria Cairns

Why it matters

Segments keep important audiences up to date without manual list maintenance. When a contact starts or stops matching the segment rules, the segment updates with the latest data.

Key Concepts

Segment: A saved contact filter that updates dynamically.

Filter rules: The conditions that determine whether a contact belongs in the segment.

Static list: A fixed audience that does not update from filter rules.

Segment actions: The options to view, duplicate, rename, or delete a saved segment.

Step-by-Step: Review and manage segments

  1. Open Contacts from the main sidebar.

  2. Open Lists, then select Segments.

  3. Review the saved segments table.

  4. Open a segment to view the contacts that currently match it.

  5. Use the row actions to duplicate, rename, or delete a segment when needed.

  6. Create new segments from the Contacts filter builder by selecting Save as segment.

Tips and Best Practices

  • Use segments for audiences that should stay current as data changes.

  • Use static lists when membership must remain fixed.

  • Name segments based on the rule intent, not only the campaign using them.

  • Review segment rules before using the audience for messaging or export.
