When Post Purchase Offers Don’t Work

The Post Purchase offer in Shopify lets you show an upsell offer after checkout but before the Thank You page. It’s a powerful way to increase average order value.

With Wiser, you can take this further by showcasing products based on AI-driven recommendations, smart conditions, and personalization, so customers see the most relevant products at the right time.

However, due to Shopify’s current limitations, there are certain cases where Post Purchase offers will not appear.


Cases where Post Purchase doesn’t work

  1. Accelerated Checkouts
    Post Purchase offers only work on Shopify’s standard checkout. If a customer uses accelerated options like Shop Pay, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, or Buy Now Pay Later services (Klarna, Afterpay, Affirm, etc.), the offer will not appear.

  2. Draft Orders & Manual Invoices
    Orders created using draft checkout links or invoices from the Shopify admin do not trigger Post Purchase offers.

  3. Subscription Products
    If the cart contains subscription products (set up through subscription apps), Post Purchase offers are not supported.

  4. Local Pickup & Local Delivery
    Customers who select local pickup or local delivery at checkout will not see Post Purchase offers.

  5. Third-Party or Custom Checkouts
    If your store uses a third-party checkout app or a headless/custom checkout, Post Purchase offers are not supported.

  6. Gift Card Only Orders
    If the cart only contains gift cards, Shopify does not allow Post Purchase upsells.

  7. Multi-Currency Checkouts
    Post Purchase offers are only available in your store’s primary currency. If a customer checks out in another currency, the offer will not appear.

  8. Orders With Duties
    If an order includes duties or customs charges, Post Purchase offers will not be shown.

  9. Order Value Below $0.50 USD
    The order total (after discounts) must be at least $0.50 USD or equivalent for a Post Purchase offer to appear.

  10. No Shipping Address
    If the order does not require a shipping address (e.g., digital-only products, or pickup/delivery options), Post Purchase offers may not be shown.


Additional Notes

  • A customer can accept up to 3 Post Purchase offers per checkout.

  • Fulfillment for the order is temporarily held until the Post Purchase step is completed (accepted, skipped, or expired).

  • Post Purchase offers only work through the Online Store channel (not other sales channels).
