With the migration of courses from Moodle to Schoology during the 2021/22 school year, there were some adjustments you will need to make to your course. Each topic (or section) in a Moodle course was converted into a folder in Schoology. Within each topic folder, you would have seen numerous items that include labels, pages, images, links, assignments, quizzes, and discussions (forums). If you have not already done so, make sure to review each item carefully so you can decide what adjustments you may need to make.

Below is a list of some of the adjustments you should have already addressed in your course(s).

Click the links (bookmarks) below to navigate to the step-by-step instructions.

  1. Unpublish (hide) most of your topic folders: Unpublish (or hide) all topic folders except for your Introduction folder and Week 1 folder. Take your time and go through the course reviewing one topic folder each week, staying ahead of students. Once you have adjusted the contents in a topic folder to your liking, publish the topic folder at least one (1) day before students are to begin working on that topic.

    1. Top folder – this is a master folder of your quiz banks. Please keep this folder unpublished (hidden) from students all year. In some cases, this folder may be empty and you may delete it.

    2. Quiz Categories folder – this folder is a master folder of your quiz categories and may not appear in each course. If listed in your course, please keep it unpublished (hidden) from students all year. In some cases, this folder may be empty and you may delete it.

  2. Create grading categories for the Schoology gradebook: Create the following grading categories: Assessments (same thing as Moodle quizzes), Assignments, and Discussions (same thing as forums). Do not create any additional categories.

  3. Adjust graded material due dates and point values: Update your due dates and total point values to ensure that they are correct for each week. Hiding the content until the week that you want students working on it will give you the control that you need to ensure that students do not work ahead.

  4. Rename the Topic 0 Folder: This is your General / Introduction topic folder. If you renamed the General topic in Moodle, then your Schoology folder should have the same name. If the topic folder name is listed as Topic 0, please rename this folder accordingly.

  5. Unpublish labels: Labels did not convert properly. Please go through your course(s) and hide these from students.

  6. Delete empty folders: In a few cases, when courses were migrated from Moodle to Schoology, folders that contain no content were created in Schoology. Please delete any empty folders that are in your course(s).

Unpublishing (hiding) a Topic Folder:

Students may be alarmed that they can only see the Introduction and Week 1 folders in your course. In your Welcome email to students, explain that you will be publishing topic folders each week. Provide students with a publishing schedule so they can be prepared for the school year.

Navigate to your Schoology course.

To the right of the topic folder name, click the gear icon and then click Unpublish.
