Whether it's an image of a map, a galaxy, a eukaryotic cell, or images of calculus problems, you'll use images throughout your course. Remember to use copyright-free materials in your course. Images should be used to enhance your content and not be a distraction. Depending on the license requirements, a best practice is to also provide an attribution below the image to give the author credit.

You can add an image in any location in Schoology that has a rich text editor including folders, pages, assignments, assessments, and discussions. The following image file types can be added to Schoology pages: .jpg, .gif, .png, .jpeg. When saving images to your WIU Google Drive folder, make sure the file permissions are set to Anyone with the link can view.

Navigate to your Schoology course. Expand the folder where the page resides that you want to edit. To the right of the page name, click the gear icon and then click Edit.

In the content area, add text to introduce the image to your students (if applicable) and explain the relevance to your content.

Below your introductory text, place the cursor where you want to insert the image, click Insert Content (1) from the rich text editor toolbar, and then click Image/Media (2).

Click Attach File, browse to the image file in your WIU Google Drive folder, click the image to select it, and then click Open. The image will be inserted into the page. After the file has loaded, you can resize the image by clicking on the image to select it and dragging the corners in or out.

You can also use a link to include an image file from the web or your Google Drive folder. Click From the Web tab, paste in the image link, and then click Insert Media.

Alt Text: To add alternative text, click once on the image to select it and then click the image icon.

Enter a brief summary in the Image Description field, adjust any other parameters as desired, and then click Update. Click here to learn more about WebAIM: Alternative Text (opens in new window).

Dimensions: The first parameter is the width and the second parameter is the height. If using the dimensions fields, select a width that is less than 800px to accommodate the majority of device monitors. Experiment with different sizes and make sure your image is not too large.

If required, add the attribution below the image. Here is a format example when the image has a CC0 license. Remember to underline the links and have them open in a new tab.

  • Image: CC license + author’s name hyperlinked to image + website’s name hyperlinked to the website.

  • This is how it will appear on the page > Image: CC0 by Openicons from Pixabay

Once you’re done editing the page, click Save Changes.

The image will now be displayed on the page. If needed, edit the page again to continue adding content or adjusting the image size.
