One of the challenges associated with teaching and learning in eAcademy is that your students lose the physical cues that confirm when they are following the concepts and materials related to the course. To compensate for the lack of physical cues, you must intentionally design online courses to include opportunities for giving and receiving feedback. Feedback can be creative; it does not always have to be in the form of formal, written messages to each student.

Provide students with positive, constructive, and meaningful feedback for all graded items including assessments, assignments, and discussions. When providing feedback, make sure to note the student's strengths as well as any area where the student may need additional support.

eAcademy Teacher Expectations

  • Clearly communicate assignment grading criteria.

  • Grade all work within seven days of submission.

  • Provide feedback that is clear, positive, specific, and focused on observable behavior that can be changed.

  • Provide a student feedback survey at the end of your course, which allows for continuous improvement.

In Schoology, you can add student feedback for assignments, discussions, and assessment questions. You can also add feedback directly in the Schoology gradebook. Review this resource to learn how.

Adding Feedback to Assignments

Navigate to your Schoology course.

From the right side of your course home page under Reminders, click the link for ungraded assignment submissions.

Click the assignment name.

Click one of the student’s names. This opens the document viewer.

Review the student’s submission and click in the Grade field at the top right of the document viewer to enter a grade.

Enter the grade and the grade comments (feedback). Check the box next to Show to student and then click Submit.

Click the right chevron halfway down the page to navigate to the next student’s submission.

When finished grading all student submissions, click the x at the top right to exit the document viewer and return to the assignment.

To learn more about the document viewer, review Understanding the document viewer in Schoology.

Adding Feedback to Discussions

Navigate to your Schoology course.

From the right side of your course home page under Reminders, click the link for ungraded discussion posts.

Click the discussion name.

Review the student’s submission and click the Grade menu icon to the right of the submission to enter a grade.

Enter the grade and the comments (feedback). Check the box next to Show to student and then click Submit.

Once the submission is graded, the Grade menu icon will change to a check mark.

Continue grading any additional student submissions.

Adding Feedback to Assessment Questions

PLEASE NOTE: For students, guardians, OEAs, and coaches to view any question feedback, you must edit the assessment. Under Student Settings next to Allow students to view results after an attempt is submitted, change the default from No to Yes.

Navigate to your Schoology course and click the assessment name.

Under the Grading tab, click the attempt for one of the students that completed the assessment.

Click Add Feedback to the right of a question.

Add Text/Image, Audio, or Video feedback and then click Save.

Continue adding feedback to other questions, as needed.

Use the chevron to navigate to the next student’s assessment results. Or you can click Back to return to all the students’ submissions.

When finished, use the breadcrumb links at the top of the assessment page to navigate back to the desired location.

Adding Feedback to the Schoology Gradebook

Navigate to your Schoology course and click Gradebook from the left menu.

Hover your mouse pointer over the bottom right corner of a cell where you want to add feedback and click the speech bubble. This opens the Grade Comment box.

Type your feedback and leave the box checked next to Display to Student. Click outside the Grade Comment box to save the feedback.

The speech bubble is now added to the bottom right corner of the cell.
