A: Item titles will have parentheses to indicate a variety of things such as quantity, size, or translations. Depending on what the parentheses is used for, you may want to keep the title as is, or remove the information in parentheses and put it in the description.

Parentheses w/ Quantity

If an item specifies the quantity or size in the title, you can get rid of the parentheses and put the size in the price variance field. Most common examples of this would be titles containing these words:

  • Pieces

  • Small, Medium, Large

  • Bottle, Can, Glass

  • Cup, Bowl

The only time you should not do this is for meat sold by weight:

  • 1/2 Lb Beef

  • 1/4 Pound Chicken

Taking out the weight from the title would leave the item with no identifier. It just becomes "Beef" or "Chicken" and that's not enough information to inform the customer understand what they're purchasing.

Parentheses w/ Multi-Language Menus

If the title has a translation in parentheses, you should keep it in the title. For example, on a Japanese menu you might find a number of items that have the Japanese name and a direct translation.

  • Example: Masago (Smelt Eggs)

The name of the roll should be written as is and you should keep "(Smelt Eggs)" in the title. Do not separate the translation.

Here are a few menu types that don't need the translations to be separated from the title: Japanese, Mexican/Spanish, Italian menus. You will often find translations included on these menus. Note that you should not use a secondary title field for these menus and items except for client Cheetah or if specifically instructed to in the menu instructions.

Parentheses w/ Miscellaneous

Examples of information in parentheses that should be removed from the title and put in the item description:

  • Example: Ham Sandwich (w/ cheese, lettuce, tomato)

  • Example: Beef Sliders (2) > you could also adjust the title to "2 Beef Sliders"

  • Example: Chicken Tenders (3) > you could also adjust the title to "3 Chicken Tenders"

  • Example: 2 Entrees, 2 Sides (per person)

Examples of information that should NOT be removed from the title and put in the item description:

  • Example: BLT (w/ fries)

  • Example: NY Steak (10 oz)

  • Example: 2018 Cedar Brook, Sauv Blanc, CA > this doesn't have parentheses but wine titles can get very long so this is an example showing you don't need to break up a wine name, it can all stay in the title.
