Sometimes the menu sources we need to transcribe are locale-specific websites like ChowNow and ToastTab, which often cannot be accessed from certain countries.

One solution to open such restricted websites, please download this free VPN service called ProtonVPN. Then follow the instructions below --- and note that you should NOT be entering any personal payment/billing information at any point. You will ONLY be using the free version!

Instructions ✏️

  1. Create an account via https://protonvpn.com/free-vpn (click on “Get ProtonVPN Free”)

  2. Leave the default settings as they are (UDP connection)

  3. Once your account is set up, download the app at https://protonvpn.com/download

  4. Open the app and log in using the credentials you just created!

  5. Once in the app, choose the location corresponding to the locale of the menu source you are transcribing by clicking on the map. For ChowNow, this will be any server in the U.S.

  6. Connect, and open the menu source again. You should now be able to use the website freely!
