A: The egg preparation extra should be used whenever eggs are present on the menu and there is no clear indication of how it is prepared.

This pre-populated extra should be used when:

  1. The menu says, "eggs any style" or

  2. If a breakfast/brunch item contains eggs in the description (with exceptions)

Note: If there is more than one egg, you do not need to add the extra twice.

Example #1

The example above clearly states that the item comes with two eggs, any style. This tells us that customers can choose how they want their eggs prepared, so you should add the egg preparation extra for this item.

Example #2

This item comes with two eggs but their preparation is not specified. While this is not as obvious as the first example, you can safely assume that an egg preparation extra would also be necessary here.

Example #3

Next, here is an example of where you would not use the egg preparation extra.

Because eggs are listed in the description for this item, you may be tempted to automatically add the egg preparation extra. However, if you take a second to assess the item, you'll see that the extra should not be added.

While the item is called "Smoked Salmon Egg Salad", you should assume that eggs in egg salad would be hardboiled (feel free to Google "egg salad" if you're unfamiliar with the dish) - this eliminates the need for the egg preparation extra since the customer is unable to modify how the egg is prepared.

Key takeaway: at first glance, it may seem obvious to automatically add the egg preparation extra whenever you see items containing eggs, but this is not always the case. Please always analyze the item and the menu before adding it!
