Steps and stairs can be made of almost any material, from metal to wood to stone. As with any landscape design element, pricing varies greatly based on the materials used. Here are some of our favorites to design with.

Stone Steps

$125 per square foot

These steps express a natural style. These work exceptionally well in cottage gardens or more traditional designs. However, large slabs may require heavy equipment, which can significantly increase.

Concrete Steps

$125 per square foot

Concrete steps are universal and work well in anything from traditional to super modern designs. Since they’re so simple, it's easy to make them work with nearly any yard, especially if the design features concrete in other areas. Best of all, they require no maintenance.

Paved Steps

$100 per square foot

When designing steps that connect to an area covered with pavers, it’s often best to use the same pavers to cover the stairs. This keeps the materials consistent and makes the stairs look cohesive with the flat-area paving around them. Paver steps are actually concrete steps with the pavers placed on top.

Wooden Steps

$150 per square foot

Wooden steps also fit in nearly any design style. You can build wood stairs using any type of wood used for decks, and must always either paint or stain them to protect them from weathering. Because of this, they come in many different looks and work equally well in modern, traditional, formal, or casual styles.

Landscape Timber Steps

$75 per square foot

Landscape timber step price varies the most. The steps are wooden frames filled with gravel or decomposed granite and are typically large and shallow. They look excellent in rustic or natural design styles but usually aren't suitable for formal designs. The wood can be painted or stained to match any wood used elsewhere in your yard. The gravel comes in many colors, shapes, and sizes, but is most often tan or grey.
