Why Are My Android Push Notifications Being Delayed?

Updated over 5 months ago

Delayed Push Notifications

Your Android phone relies on a data connection to pick up new messages and then notify you of them. If you do not have a strong network connection, your notifications will be delayed as a result.

This problem can occur if your phone is set to disallow background activity. Once it does, it will immediately try to ping the cloud, download your messages, and notify you of them – which can sometimes come in much later than when you actually received the new message.

Notes:

  • Ensure your phone is properly set up with YouMail.

  • Ensure that your phone is still connected to wifi when it is sleeping or idle. See instructions below.

  • If you are signed up for a human-edited Read-It plan, your notifications will always be a few minutes delayed as our professionals work to transcribe your voicemails for you as accurately as possible.

  • Using the app tells your Android OS to prioritize data to YouMail, so the more often you open the app, the more data is allotted to it.

Forward Calls to YouMail

Make sure that your phone is properly forwarded to YouMail. You can verify your activation by doing a test call. Follow these instructions to do so.

Make Sure Background Activity is Enabled

  • Go to the phone menu and tap Settings.

  • Scroll down and select Apps

  • Then, scroll down the list of applications and tap on YouMail (this list should be in alphabetical order)

You should now experience fewer delays in your message notifications. Additionally, you can also extend your phone’s battery life by keeping wifi on. Your phone will not have to work as hard to download new messages when it is idle and a wifi connection is available. If you know that you will not have access to wifi, you can easily turn it off.
