What if a Guardian wants to talk to a DM ahead of a session?

Written by Ida B. Holder

Can I meet my child's DM before a session?

Yes, and many guardians do. We call it a get-to-know-you consult. It is a short video call with the DM so you can put a face to the name, ask whatever you want, and decide whether they are the right fit for your child.

Your child is welcome to join you, as long as you stay on the call with them the whole time.

How to set one up

  1. Message the DM through StartPlaying and ask about a consult. Mention roughly when you are free and whether your child will be sitting in.

  2. The DM requests a Zoom link from us and sends it to you through StartPlaying messages.

  3. Join at the agreed time and ask away.

Good to know

Cost

There is no charge. Consults are a courtesy that DMs offer, not something you pay for

Recording

The call is recorded, the same as every Young Heroes session, so we have a record if anything is ever raised

Where

On a Zoom link we issue. All contact with your DM stays on StartPlaying, including this call

Availability

Consults are up to each DM. Some offer one to every new family, some do not offer them at all, and that is not a reflection on the DM

What to ask about

Anything that would help you feel settled. Guardians most often ask how the DM runs a table, what the adventure involves, how content is handled, and what their child needs to have ready for the first session.

One thing this is not

A consult is a conversation, not gameplay. If what you are after is character creation and setting table expectations with the group, that is a Session Zero, and your DM can tell you whether their adventure includes one.
