Ensuring Young Hero Safety and Privacy

Written by Mandycore the Manticore

Dungeon Master Safety Standards

By participating as a Dungeon Master on our Young Heroes platform, you agree to hold yourself to the highest safety standards possible when working with children.

This is the commitment you are making to every Guardian who books you, and to every Young Hero who joins your table.

We expect that you run all your games in a way that promotes safety, mental well-being, and online privacy.

Safety Rules for all Dungeon Masters

  • Always supervise your games. Do not leave Young Heroes unattended or have a Young Hero act as as a Dungeon Master on your behalf. Please ensure you are at your computer for the entire time Zoom is open and your game is running.

  • If you need to take a short break, such as going to the bathroom, ensure both you and your Young Heroes all mute and turn their webcams off.

  • All Dungeon Masters and Young Heroes must have their webcams on and their faces must always be visible while in an Adventure.

  • Never share the Zoom link with anyone. Also, never move a session to another meeting or another tool. Use only the link StartPlaying provided you.

  • Admit Young Heroes from the Zoom waiting room one at a time and confirm their name and identity. Never let everyone in all at once. Letting six people in with one click means you haven't verified anyone.

  • Only kids and teens age 9-17 can play in public facing Young Heroes games. If someone joins your Adventure who is not a Young Hero between those ages, remove them from the Zoom call immediately and email youngheroes@startplayinggames.com

  • If a family member or guardian wants to play in a Young Heroes game, they will need to book a private, Family game. They are not permitted to join, or sit-in on, a public game.

Communication Rules for Dungeon Masters

  • Treat every community member with respect - other DMs, guardians, and Young Heroes alike.

  • Communicate thoughtfully, and carry yourself professionally at all times.

  • Do not solicit personal details from players. Do not ask anyone to share more than the session requires. If you are ever unsure whether something is okay to ask for, contact support before you ask.

  • Never communicate directly with a young player outside of the Zoom link provided to you.

Reporting Rules for Dungeon Masters

  • If a child is in immediate danger, call 911 first.

  • If you suspect abuse or neglect, follow the mandatory reporting process. For any other concern about a Young Hero, a guardian, or another participant, contact the Safety Team at youngheroes@startplaying.com.

  • When you report, describe what happened, when it happened, the session or booking it relates to, and who was involved. Stick to what you observed.
