What are placements?

Placements are placeholders on the website where the ad appears. The Placements dimension provides a new level of targeting & reporting, giving advertisers more granular control over their campaigns’ performance.

Where can I find Placements?

You can find Placements with all other reporting dimensions on the left-hand-side of the dashboard.

All reporting insights, except for Audience Metrics, are available in the reporting grid.

Alongside Placement IDs, you can also find the Placement Type reporting column.

What is Placement type?

Placement type specifies the format of the ad you are purchasing, giving you a better understanding of where on the page your ads are appearing.

In line with the IAB OpenRTB standard, there are 4 main types of Placement types:

1 - In feed - for example as an item inside the organic feed/grid/listing/carousel.

2 - In article page - ie. in the article of the page or single image page

3 - Ads section - for example in the ads section on the right rail, as a banner-style placement near the content, etc.

4 - Recommendation widget - most commonly presented below the article content

*Keep in mind not all exchanges support placement-type reporting. This metric will be indicated as “Not reported” where not available.

How can I optimise on the placement level?

In addition to blocklisting specific placements directly in the grid or adding them to an allowlist, you can use bid modifiers to increase or decrease the bid on a specific placement based on your KPI performance. To learn more about bid modifiers, click here.

How can I set up placement targeting?

There are two ways to target specific placements:

  1. Through the Publisher & Placements section in the Management console

  2. Directly in the reporting grid by adding them to an existing or a new Publishers & Placements list

Let’s take a look at how both options work.

1. To learn more about how to create and target the Publishers & Placements list through the management console, please refer to this article.

2. You also have the option to add a specific placement to a Publishers & Placements list directly from the grid. Make sure to select the desired placements by ticking the box next to their name. Then click the Add to Publishers & Placements list button (screenshot below).

A new window dialogue will appear, giving you the option to add the selected placements to an existing Publishers & Placements list available in a dropdown or to create a new one.

To create a new list: select Create new list, give it a name, and hit Save. You’ve now created a new Publishers & Placements list available to target on any level of the dashboard. It will also be available for you in the Management Console.

To target a Publishers & Placements list, navigate to settings on the desired level of the dashboard. Scroll down to the Publishers & Placements section and select to target the list you just created.

PLEASE NOTE: Placement-type metrics serve for reporting purposes and are not yet available to target.
