Learn about UTM tracking, how it works, and how you can use it in your ZipLeads email marketing. It helps you understand how well your marketing is performing.
What is UTM tracking?
UTM parameters are short codes added to the end of URLs. They help tools like Google Analytics work out where your website traffic comes from. When you include UTM parameters in your ZipLeads email campaigns, you can analyse how your emails affect your website traffic and conversions.
ZipLeads supports 3 UTM parameters by default:
utm_source = email: This is a mandatory field. It's selected by default and has the value "email" for internal tracking.
utm_medium = email marketing: This is a mandatory field, but you can customise the value. The default value is "email marketing".
utm_campaign = Campaign Name (Send Date): This is an optional field. You can choose its value from the drop-downs.
You can also add up to 5 additional parameters to this list by entering their values as text.
Best practices for UTM parameters
Avoid personal information: Don't use personally identifiable information (for example, tax file numbers or addresses). Analytics platforms restrict this data.
Use the essential parameters: Stick to utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign for clear, effective analysis.
Use consistent case: UTM parameters are case sensitive. Choose a capitalisation rule and use it every time.
Use underscores: Use underscores (_) instead of spaces to avoid encoding issues.
When UTM parameters won't work
Trigger links: UTM parameters currently don't work on links added as trigger links.
Incorrect syntax: Links need to be correct and include the required prefix, such as https://. Check this carefully if the link is saved as a custom value.
Test emails: We recommend sending a dummy campaign to test your UTM parameters.
How to use UTM parameters
