An introduction to click tracking
This guide explains the basics of click tracking and how to use it.
What is click tracking?
Click tracking shows you how recipients interact with the links in your emails. When you turn on click tracking, you can:
See which links in your emails are being clicked.
See which recipients are engaging with your content.
See how many times each link is clicked.
Default behaviour
Click tracking is turned off by default. To use it, turn it on manually for each email campaign.
Why use click tracking?
Understand subscriber engagement: Click tracking shows you how your subscribers engage with your content. Knowing which links get clicked helps you gauge interest and tailor your content.
Analyse link performance: Click tracking shows you which links are most popular with your subscribers. This helps you improve your email layout and focus your content on what engages people most.
When click tracking doesn't work
Click tracking won't work in these situations:
Click performance is turned off: If you don't turn on click performance tracking when you send or schedule the email, no click data is collected.
Test emails: Click tracking doesn't apply to test emails. To test click tracking properly, send a dummy campaign to a few selected contacts.
Trigger links: Click tracking doesn't currently support trigger links. Trigger links already use their own redirection and tracking.
Links that don't start with http:// or https://: Click tracking only works for URLs that begin with http:// or https://. Links without these prefixes, such as direct links or links saved in custom values, can't be tracked.
Unsupported links: Click tracking doesn't cover clicks on email addresses (mailto: links) or anchor links. Make sure all links in your campaign use full (absolute) URLs.
System-generated links: Links the system creates, such as preview links and unsubscribe links, aren't tracked.
Syntax errors or typos: Links with errors or typos may be broken, which stops clicks being tracked. Double-check all your URLs before sending.
Magic links: In some cases, links that contain custom values or custom fields might not work. We recommend testing them by sending a dummy email campaign first.
