HVAC Troubleshooting Guide

Don't sweat AC repairs at your restaurant.

Updated over 8 months ago

Don’t lose your cool when your AC seems to be down. Try these troubleshooting tips before you contact an HVAC professional.

❗Important: It’s always recommended to keep your AC set at 72-75° F. If the thermostat is set too low, the coils may freeze over or overheat. If this happens, the only option is to turn the AC off completely to allow the unit to "breathe."

Problem: AC won't turn on

Check the batteries on the thermostat. Even hardwired thermostats may take batteries as a backup in case the breaker trips. Try replacing the batteries.

Toggle the breaker off for 10 minutes and back on.

  • 💡Tip: Not sure which breaker your AC unit is on? Look for the larger breaker, or breakers joined together like this:

Make sure the thermostat is set to "Cool." If there have been big weather changes recently, the thermostat may have been set to "Heat."

Problem: AC unit is blowing warm air

❗Important: Make sure the thermostat isn’t set an extremely low temperature. No matter how low you set that number, your system will always cool at the same rate.

Confirm the thermostat is set to "Cool." If there have been big weather changes recently, the thermostat may have been set to "Heat."

Toggle the breakers off for a minute and back on.

  • 💡 Tip: Toggle both the AC breaker and the breaker to the air handler/exhaust fans/makeup air units.

Problem: AC isn't cooling enough

❗Important: Make sure the thermostat isn’t set an extremely low temperature. No matter how low you set that number, your system will always cool at the same rate.

Confirm all windows and doors are closed. If the temperature outside is high, the AC unit may not be able to keep up with the demand.

Are you going through a heat wave? If temperatures are at or above 100° F, the AC units may not be able to meet the demands. Bump the temperature up a few degrees to avoid having the unit freeze over.

Problem: Leak present

Has it rained recently? If yes, it's likely a roof issue. If not, an HVAC pro will need to come out to investigate further.
