A barcode reader, also known as a barcode scanner, is an electronic device used to read and output printed barcodes to a computer. It consists of a light source, a lens, and a light sensor that translates optical impulses into electrical signals. Barcode readers capture and decode the information contained within the barcode, providing fast and accurate data processing. This process is similar to self-checkout, except that these barcode scanners securely and precisely extract sensitive information, ensuring accuracy and data protection.

ZipID uses advanced barcode technology to:

  1. Accurately capture personal data from the ID(s) presented by the new hire. Barcode readers offer robust fraud protection because it's difficult for fraudsters to replicate barcodes. Ensuring that both the visual data on the ID and the data embedded in the barcode match is a critical step in identity verification.

  2. Enhance accuracy where OCR tools may struggle. Old or worn IDs can be difficult for OCR technology to read accurately, but ZipID ensures that the extracted barcode data is precise. Before the I-9 auto-fill feature activates, users must manually verify the data for complete accuracy.

Protect against identity theft by detecting discrepancies between the visual information on the document and the barcode data. If these don’t match, it may indicate that the document has been altered in an attempt to commit identity theft or fraud, as described above.

ZipID uses a barcode scanner for IDs that have a barcode, such as passports, driver licenses, and USCIS documents. Barcode scanning is the preferred method because it is more accurate than OCR technology. However, OCR tools are also highly accurate and are necessary for documents without barcodes, such as Social Security cards and birth certificates.

If the ID is old or damaged, the OCR tool may struggle to read it accurately. In such cases, manual review or adjustments may be required to ensure compliance and accuracy.
