Klarna Payments is a separate payment method for purchases in your online store. It is not the same product as Kustom Checkout and does not change how you pay for your own Abicart subscription. You need a Klarna Payments agreement and an activated Abicart connection. Ask support to confirm the subscription and add-ons for your store before you begin.
Verify that the task concerns separate Klarna Payments, not the Klarna that is already in the Kustom checkout.
Get the correct agreement and integration credentials from Klarna and add the method in the Admin.
Set the customer type, countries, currencies, and amount limits to match your agreement.
Test in the designated test environment and check the order and payment reference before using the method for real purchases. An active checkbox does not prove that a purchase works.
Choose the right guide and prepare the connection
If you have Klarna as part of Kustom, use the Kustom Checkout guide. If you need to change your store's own subscription payment, use subscription renewal and payment. Do not install an extra payment product to solve any of these needs.
For separate Klarna Payments: contact Klarna for an agreement and ask for integration credentials for the correct store and environment. Store them securely. Test credentials are not live credentials.
Get started step-by-step
Open Settings > Payment methods > Add new payment method and select Klarna Payments. If the option is missing, contact support to check its activation.
Fill in the account/integration credentials for the intended environment. See the fields and images below.
Select the name, customer types/groups, countries, currencies, and amount limits. A setting in Abicart does not automatically extend what your Klarna agreement supports.
Save and check the method in a designated test checkout for the correct customer type, country, currency, and order amount. Follow Klarna's test instructions; do not try an unplanned real purchase.
Verify that both the Abicart order and the corresponding Klarna payment reference exist and have the expected status. Plan the transition to live separately and check the correct live credentials.
Settings and images
Add Klarna Payments to the store
Go to Settings -> Payment methods -> Add new payment method.
Select "Klarna Payments" from the list and then click "Add". If Klarna Payments is missing from the list, ask support to confirm the activation and terms for your subscription and Klarna agreement.
The payment method's settings are now displayed.
Status
Active
Check the box to activate the payment method. It will only be displayed when the customer, country, currency, and amount conditions, as well as the provider's availability, are met.
Default
A setting to make the payment method the default in the checkout.
Make available only for the customers or customer groups I specify.
If you do not want all customers to be able to use this payment method, you can disable it for non-logged-in customers with this setting. You then go to each customer group to activate the payment method there.
Available for customer type
You can set the payment method to be available only for one customer type or for all.
Require the buyer to enter their personal/organization number
Check the box to make the personal/organization number mandatory in the checkout.
Send confirmation of payment status to the store owner
A setting to enable a separate email about the payment status for this payment method to be sent to the store owner.
Disable purchase of gift card products with this payment method
Enable the setting if the customer should not be able to purchase gift card products with this payment method.
Account
The next block contains fields for Klarna's details, which are provided by Klarna.
Username - Details you receive from Klarna.
Password - Details you receive from Klarna.
Color border - Setting to affect the color in Klarna's payment window.
Color selected- Setting to affect the color in Klarna's payment window.
Color bullet points - Setting to affect the color in Klarna's payment window.
Color texts - Setting to affect the color in Klarna's payment window.
Test mode – Use only with the designated Playground/test credentials and Klarna's test data. Test and live credentials belong to different environments and should not be mixed. Verify that your test setup is supported before the method is shown to real customers.
Allow gift certificates - Check the box if customers should be able to combine payment with gift cards with this payment method.
Name and Description
Name
Enter a different name if you want to change how the payment method is displayed in the checkout. The field is optional and can be left blank.
Detailed description
A field for entering a text that informs the buyer about how the payment method works. Can be left blank.
Currencies
If you have several active currencies in the store, you can restrict them for each payment method. The default setting is “All of the store's activated currencies,” but if you check “Specific currencies,” all active currencies are displayed, and you can choose to disable those that should not apply to this payment method.
Countries
The default setting for the payment method is that it applies to all countries to which the store offers delivery (Settings -> Shipping). If you want to restrict a payment method to only certain countries, you can check “Specific countries” and then specify the countries that can use this payment method.
Order status
If you want orders placed via this payment method to receive a specific order status, you can specify it here. Select the status from the list.
Restriction based on order total
A setting to limit the amount that a payment method can handle. If you choose to limit the amount between two intervals, it always refers to the total order value, including shipping and other fees.
Fee added at checkout when ordering
A function to add an extra fee to the purchase, for example, a handling fee.
Gift cards: purchase and redemption are different options
Disable purchase of gift card products prevents the customer from buying a new gift card with Klarna Payments. Allow gift certificates applies to using an existing gift card as partial payment with the method. Check both settings based on how your checkout should work.
Troubleshoot in the correct order
Symptom | Check and next step |
Method is missing in Admin | Ask support to check the activation and correct connection for your subscription. Do not create Kustom as a replacement if your agreement is for KP. |
The method is active but not visible in the checkout | Check the customer type, customer group/login, country, currency, and the entire order amount including shipping and fees. Compare with your agreement and the correct environment. |
Authentication or test fails | Verify that the account, keys, and test mode belong to the same environment. Use Klarna's Playground/test data. Never send passwords in a regular support chat. |
Reservation exists but no Abicart order is found | Do not ask the customer to pay repeatedly. Note the time, secure payment reference, and any order number. Let support reconcile the payment and order status before a new attempt. |
The order needs to be changed or money refunded | Check if the amount is reserved or charged. Use the correct order management/provider portal; a changed Abicart order is not proof of a completed refund. |
When contacting support: specify the store, environment, customer type, country/currency, amount, time, error text, and order/payment reference. Do not send full card details or API passwords. See Klarna's instructions before testing.
