Create customer choices for sizes, colors, and custom text

Learn how to add customer choices like sizes and colors to your products. Create variants, manage stock levels, and link images easily.

Let the customer choose a size, color, or custom text and link the correct price, stock, and product number to the choice.

This guide applies to store administrators in Go, Plus, and Pro. It describes Customer's choices on the product's edit page. There is also a variant model where each combination is handled as its own variant product. Check which editor the product uses; do not change the model or variant structure just to change how the choices look.

1. Choose the right type of customer choice

Choice is a list, for example, Color or Size. The customer selects one alternative from each list. Custom text is a text field, for example, the text to be printed on a shirt. A regular product attribute that only describes the product is not automatically a customer choice.

Multiple choices can form combinations, for example, Blue/S and Blue/M. A color list is not a multiple-choice box where the customer buys several colors in the same order line; the customer needs to select the intended combination and add it. If multiple combinations are to be purchased, they are normally added as separate lines.

2. Check presentation and stock

Customer choices can be presented as dropdown lists or as a variant list depending on the theme and setting. Check the display in the active theme, on both mobile and desktop. Product filters on category pages are a separate feature; a created color list is not in itself a complete configuration for filtering.

On the product's page Customer's choices, under Settings → Stock, there are options for whether out-of-stock alternatives should be displayed. The presentation can differ between a variant list and several combined dropdown lists. Check an out-of-stock combination and an available combination in the actual store; a visible color/size name is not proof that the specific combination can be purchased. In themes with the 'Max number of variants' setting, the display can switch to choices when the number of combinations exceeds the selected limit. Therefore, check both the product's stock setting and the theme's presentation.

3. Create the choice

  1. Open Catalogue → Products, select the product and open Customer's choices.

  2. Select Add choice and enter a clear name, for example, Color.

  3. Select Required if the buyer must make the choice.

  4. Activate Own properties (stock balance, article number, image) if each alternative or combination needs its own identity, stock, or image.

Plan the combinations before you change Own properties. If it is activated for multiple lists, combinations of their alternatives are created. Removing choices or changing this setting can cause previous combination rows, product numbers, and stock to no longer be used. Checking the box again is not a safe way to restore them. Document or export existing combinations before making such a change.

For separate stock balances, Enable stock management must be active under the product's properties. If an ERP system controls the stock, the change must be coordinated there.

4. Add alternatives and set the correct price impact

  1. Select Add alternative. For example, type Blue.

  2. Enter any Price impact and Weight impact (grams). In this editor, they are additions/deductions to the base product's price and weight, not the desired final price or total weight.

  3. Leave the impact empty if the alternative should not change the price or weight. Then add the other alternatives, for example, Yellow and Red, and save.

  4. Fill in each combination's product number and stock where own properties are used.

Example: base price 100 and price impact 20 results in 120 for one item before other price rules apply. Entering 120 as the price impact would result in 220 in this example. Check separate own prices if the product instead uses the new variant product model.

Numeric text fields can affect quantity, price, or weight. The setting to apply price impact before quantity multiplication determines if the surcharge should also be multiplied by such measurements. It does not mean that the measurements are automatically multiplied 'first'. Always check a calculation example with your units of measurement and multiple items before the product is sold.

5. Link images and stable product numbers

First, upload the product images under the product's properties. Then use Select image for the alternative or variant. Check that the correct image is displayed after each combination is selected.

Give each sellable combination a unique product number when it needs to be identified in import, export, ERP, or POS systems. Example: 1234-S and 1234-M. Do not use the same number for two combinations and do not change an already integrated number without checking the connection in both systems.

6. Check the customer's result

Try an incomplete required choice, every valid combination, a sold-out combination, and multiple order lines. Check the price, image, article number, stock, and shipping weight in the shopping cart and at checkout. A choice name in the administration does not prove that the variant's identity is carried over to an integration.

Quick start

  1. Choose list or text field and identify the product's variant model.

  2. Plan combinations and custom properties before making structural changes.

  3. Create the options and set the price impact as an addition/deduction.

  4. Check unique numbers, stock, images, and purchasing behavior in the active theme.

Customer's choices and custom variant properties are supported in Go, Plus, and Pro. The theme's presentation, category filters, and external integrations have separate prerequisites. Check them for the feature you want to use in addition to the customer choice itself.
