Tips for Your First Mentorship Session

Here’s a simple guide to help you prepare for a fruitful session.

Updated over 3 months ago

We’re thrilled you’ve taken this important step in your mentorship journey, and we’re here to ensure it’s a meaningful experience! Here’s a simple guide to help you prepare for a fruitful session.

🤝 Start with Introductions (10 min)

Kick things off by getting to know your mentee. Take the time to understand their background, journey, and what brings them here. Here are a few icebreaker questions to set the tone:

  1. Where are you from? What’s your hometown like?

  2. Can you share a bit about your career journey so far?

  3. What are your main goals for this session, and why did you choose to connect with me?

Understanding your mentee creates a foundation for better communication and helps build a strong, mutually beneficial relationship.

🎤 Diving Into the Session

This part will flow based on your mentee’s communication style and the goals they want to achieve. Here's how to ensure the session stays productive and aligned:

  • Reiterate the goal of the session based on what they shared during intros.

  • Let them take the lead—be an active listener.

  • Ask open-ended questions to explore their thoughts and challenges.

  • Keep the conversation light and positive.

  • Be honest in sharing your perspective and experiences that relate to their goals.

  • Take notes during the session to refer back to later. If you're looking for a great note-taking template, ADPList's Notion templates are a good place to start.

👋 Wrapping Up

As you near the end of your conversation, make sure to:

  • Thank your mentee for their time and for choosing to connect with you.

  • Summarize the key takeaways and any next steps or action items.

  • Let them know if you’re open to future sessions (if you feel it’s a good fit).

  • Share relevant resources or follow-up materials after the call.

👉 Tips for a Great Mentorship Conversation

The Power of Empathy

Empathy is essential to building trust and fostering an open, supportive relationship with your mentee. Here’s how you can cultivate empathy during your session:

  1. Perspective is key: center the conversation on your mentee’s experiences and goals.

  2. Use the ABC model: Acknowledge, Breathe, and be Curious – acknowledge your own reactions, take deep breaths to stay grounded, and remain curious about your mentee’s perspective.

  3. Be flexible: let go of any fixed ideas of how the session should go. Adapt to what your mentee needs and be open to adjusting your approach.

  4. Recognize uniqueness: while shared experiences can build rapport, remember that no two journeys are exactly alike. Use similarities to deepen the conversation but stay attuned to their unique path.

Empathy is a skill you can strengthen over time through practice and intentional effort. Don’t aim for perfection—just focus on improving with every interaction.

🙌 Lastly, Have Fun!

Keep an open mind and enjoy the process! These sessions are not only impactful for your mentee but also an opportunity for your own growth and fulfillment. The more you invest in the experience, the more rewarding it becomes.
