What Are Popup Steps and Why They Matter

In Alia, popup steps are distinct, individual screens that users navigate through within a single popup campaign. Instead of presenting all information or a lengthy form at once, steps allow you to break down your interaction into a logical, guided flow. Think of them as individual pages within a mini-website that appears as your popup.

You can include lists for clarity:

Common Step Types:

  • Welcome Step: The initial screen that users see. It's perfect for introducing your offer, asking a qualifying question, or presenting a compelling call to action before the main interaction.

  • Form Step: Designed specifically to collect customer information, such as email addresses, names, or preferences. Using a dedicated form step helps keep the initial welcome concise.

  • Thank You Step: Appears after a user has completed an action, like submitting a form. It confirms their submission, provides next steps (e.g., "Check your inbox"), or offers a final call to action.

Why Use Multiple Steps:

  • Reduce Overwhelm: Breaking complex forms or lengthy messages into smaller, digestible pieces makes the interaction less intimidating for your visitors, improving the likelihood of completion.

  • Improve Conversions: Each step can focus on one specific goal, guiding users smoothly through a logical progression. This targeted approach reduces friction and can significantly boost your conversion rates.

  • Better Mobile Experience: On smaller mobile screens, focused content per step is far easier to consume and interact with. Multi-step popups adapt better to various screen sizes, providing a smoother experience.

Creating New Steps in Your Popup Flow

Adding new steps to your Alia popup is a straightforward process, enabling you to build dynamic and engaging user journeys. Follow these instructions to expand your popup's functionality.

  1. Navigate to Your Popup: From your Alia Dashboard, select the popup you wish to edit to open it in the editor.

  2. Locate the Add Step Button: On the top panel of the editor, you'll see a list of your existing popup steps. Look for the prominent "+" icon (often labeled "Add Step" or similar), typically found at the end of this step list.

  3. Click to Add: Click the "+" button to initiate the creation of a new step.

  4. Choose Step Type: A modal window will appear, prompting you to select a starting point for your new step. You can choose from various predefined templates (e.g., "Email Collection Form", "Thank You Screen") or select a blank step to build from scratch.

  5. Name Your Step: Immediately after creation, give your new step a clear, descriptive name (e.g., "Email Signup", "Offer Details"). This helps you quickly identify its purpose within your popup's flow.

Note: While multi-step popups are powerful, keep your overall design concise. Most effective popups utilize 2-3 steps maximum. Adding too many steps can reintroduce complexity and deter users. Always use the "Preview" option to test the complete step sequence and ensure a smooth, logical user journey.

Deleting Unwanted Steps

If a step is no longer needed, was created in error, or is part of an outdated flow, Alia allows you to easily remove it from your popup campaign. Exercise caution before deleting, as this action is often irreversible.

  1. Select the Step: Navigate to the steps list within the editor and click on the step you intend to delete.

  2. Open Step Menu: Right click on the step to open the drop down menu

  3. Choose Delete: From the dropdown menu, select the "Delete" option.

Before Deleting Steps:

  • Check Dependencies: Prior to deleting a step, ensure that no buttons or navigation elements in other steps are linked to it. Deleting a linked step can lead to broken navigation and a non-functional popup flow.

  • Save Important Content: If the step contains unique text, images, or specific settings you might need in the future, copy and save them elsewhere before proceeding with deletion, as this action cannot be undone.
