What is ADA?

ADA stands for the Americans with Disabilities Act, a U.S. law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. In the context of websites and digital tools, it means your online presence must be accessible to people with disabilities, including those who use screen readers, have limited mobility, or are visually impaired.

Does ADA Apply to My Business?

If your business is U.S. based (or serves U.S. customers) and falls under one of the following, then yes:

  • Private businesses that are open to the public (retail stores, restaurants, etc.)

  • E-commerce stores selling products or services online

  • Organizations with 15+ employees

  • Any company receiving government funding or contracting with the government

Even if it’s not legally required, ADA compliance protects you from lawsuits and also improves user experience for everyone.

💡 We would highly recommend consulting with your legal counsel about the full scope of ADA and how it affects your business.

How is Alia ADA Compliant?

At Alia, we believe every customer deserves an inclusive shopping experience, and that includes making our popups usable by everyone, including those who rely on assistive technologies.

These are the steps that Alia has taken in order to be compliant with ADA:

Keyboard Accessibility

All interactive elements—like buttons, inputs, and options—can be accessed and used using just the keyboard. This ensures users who cannot use a mouse can still interact with the popup smoothly.

Focus Trap

When a popup is open, the keyboard focus stays within the popup until it’s closed. This prevents users from accidentally tabbing out of the popup and getting lost on the page, a key requirement for accessible user flows.

Readable Design

We follow accessibility best practices in design by using:

  • Easy-to-read font sizes

  • Strong color contrast between text and background
This supports users with low vision or color blindness.

Consistent Behavior

Our popups behave predictably across different screen sizes, devices, and input methods. This consistency helps users who rely on assistive technologies better understand and navigate the experience.

Screen Reader Support

All content in Alia popups is structured in a way that’s readable by screen readers, allowing visually impaired users to understand the context and interact with the popup content effectively.
