International Phone Number Collection with Attentive

Complete guide to how and make sure you're collecting international phone numbers correctly with your Attentive integration.

Written by Cory Gill

If you'd like to collect phone numbers from visitors outside the United States and pass them into Attentive through Alia, you'll need to configure country-specific Sign Up Source IDs within Attentive and connect them to the appropriate Alia popups.

This article walks through the setup process.

Before You Start

Before configuring anything in Alia, confirm with your Attentive team that your account is enabled for international SMS collection and messaging.

Alia cannot verify whether your Attentive account supports non-US sending. If you're unsure, contact Attentive directly before proceeding.

Step 1: Create Country-Specific Sign Up Source IDs in Attentive

Attentive requires separate Sign Up Source IDs for different countries and regions.

For example, if you'd like to collect phone numbers from:

  • Canada

  • Great Britain

  • Australia

You'll need a dedicated Sign Up Source ID for each region.

If you need a refresher on obtaining Sign Up Source IDs from Attentive, follow our Attentive integration guide.

The only difference is that you'll request a Sign Up Source ID tied to a specific country rather than your standard US signup source.

Examples:

  • Canada Sign Up Source ID

  • Great Britain Sign Up Source ID

  • Australia Sign Up Source ID

Your Attentive team can create these for you.

Step 2: Create Region-Specific Popups in Alia

Next, create dedicated Alia popups for the countries or regions where you'd like to collect phone numbers.

For example:

  • Canada Popup

  • United Kingdom Popup

  • Australia Popup

These popups should only be shown to visitors from the intended region.

To do this within Alia targeting settings, use either:

  • In Countries

  • In Markets

Depending on how your store is configured.

Examples

  • Canada popup → Target visitors In Countries: Canada

  • UK popup → Target visitors In Countries: United Kingdom

  • Australia popup → Target visitors In Countries: Australia

Or:

  • Canada popup → Target visitors In Markets: Canada

  • UK popup → Target visitors In Markets: United Kingdom

This ensures visitors see the correct popup and are subscribed through the correct Attentive Sign Up Source ID.

Step 3: Override the Sign Up Source ID in Alia

Once Attentive has provided your international Sign Up Source IDs:

  1. Open the Alia popup associated with that region.

  2. Click Integration Settings in the top-right corner.

  3. Locate the Attentive Sign Up Source ID field.

  4. Replace your default Sign Up Source ID with the country-specific Sign Up Source ID provided by Attentive.

  5. Save your changes.

This override applies only to that popup and allows phone numbers collected through the popup to be routed to the correct Attentive signup source.

Example

Canada Popup

UK Popup

Great Britain Sign Up Source ID

US Popup

Step 4: Verify Your Attentive Configuration

Before launching, confirm the following inside Attentive:

  • The Sign Up Source ID is active.

  • The Sign Up Source ID is configured for the intended country.

  • The Sign Up Source ID is connected to the correct journey, offer, or signup experience.

  • Subscribers entering through that source will receive the appropriate messaging flow.

If you're unsure, your Attentive team can help validate the setup.

Testing Your Setup

Before launching, we recommend:

  1. Confirming the popup displays only in the intended country or market.

  2. Submitting a test phone number.

  3. Verifying the subscriber appears in Attentive.

  4. Confirming the subscriber entered through the expected Sign Up Source ID.

  5. Confirming the correct SMS journey or offer is triggered.

Once these checks pass, you're ready to begin collecting international phone numbers through Alia and Attentive.
