Difference in Visitor Count Alia vs Shopify

Understand why Alia and Shopify visitor counts don't always match, including differences in bot detection and returning visitor tracking.

Why Does Alia’s Visitor Count Differ From Shopify?

It is normal to see differences between visitor counts reported by Alia and Shopify. These discrepancies are expected because both platforms use different methods and datasets to identify visitors, bots, and returning users.

Common Use Cases

This article may help if you notice:

  • Alia reporting more visitors than Shopify

  • Visitor counts not matching exactly between platforms

  • Concerns about returning visitor tracking

Different Bot Detection Methods

Alia and Shopify use different systems to determine what qualifies as bot or automated traffic.

Because of this:

  • Shopify may exclude certain visitors that Alia counts

  • Alia may include traffic that Shopify filters out

  • Differences in bot classification can affect total visitor counts

In many cases, these differences are relatively small, but for some stores they may become more noticeable depending on traffic patterns.

Different Returning Visitor Knowledge Bases

Another common reason for discrepancies is how returning visitors are identified.

Because Alia only begins building visitor history after installation, some visitors may be classified differently compared to Shopify, which may already have historical visitor data.

For example:

  1. A shopper visits the store before Alia is installed

  2. Alia is later installed on the site

  3. The same shopper returns afterward

In this scenario:

  • Shopify may classify the shopper as a returning visitor

  • Alia may classify the shopper as a new visitor because it had no prior visitor history before installation

Both platforms may classify visitors differently because they rely on different tracking methodologies and historical datasets.

Daily vs Rolling Visitor Totals

In some cases, rolling-period visitor totals may not exactly match the sum of daily reports because analytics platforms may calculate visitors differently across reporting windows. As a result, totals shown in different views may not always align perfectly.

Shopify Sessions vs. Alia Visitors

Another common source of confusion is the difference between Shopify Sessions and Alia Visitors.

A Shopify Session represents a browsing session on your store. A single person can generate multiple sessions over time—for example, if they visit your store several times in a day or return on different days. As a result, session counts can be higher than the number of individual people who visited your site.

An Alia Visitor represents a unique visitor during the selected reporting period. Regardless of how many times that person returns within the reporting window, they are counted as a single visitor.

Because these metrics measure different things, Shopify Session counts and Alia Visitor counts are not expected to match and should not be compared directly.

Important Notes

  • Visitor discrepancies between Alia and Shopify are expected behavior

  • Differences are commonly caused by bot filtering and returning visitor logic

  • Alia can only identify returning visitors after installation

  • Higher visitor counts in Alia do not necessarily indicate a tracking issue
