The short version: images up to 15 MB, and crop covers somewhere between square and 3:2. A wide banner is the usual reason a cover looks blurry. 🖼️
Upload limits
These are enforced by All Gravy, so an oversized file is rejected rather than quietly compressed.
Images — 15 MB. JPG, JPEG, PNG or GIF
Video — 300 MB. MP4 or MOV
PDF attachments — 100 MB, on feed posts and handbooks. PDF only
Account logo — 3 MB
Profile picture — 2 MB
One exception worth knowing: generating an article from a PDF has a tighter limit of around 10 MB, well below the 100 MB you can attach. If a large PDF attaches fine but will not generate, that is why.
Why a cover looks blurry
Almost always the shape of the image, not its resolution.
Covers are displayed in a card that is roughly square. Feed a very wide banner into it — a 2560 × 853 header, say — and there is not enough height to work with, so it gets stretched and softened.
Crop covers to between 1:1 and 3:2 before uploading. A modest image at the right shape looks sharper than a huge one at the wrong shape: a 670 × 501 cover renders perfectly.
What to use where
Collection, course and article covers — crop to 3:2 or square
Images inside an article or post — any sensible size under 15 MB. These display at full width, so wide is fine here
Logo and profile pictures — square, and keep them small
If an upload fails
Check the file type against the list above. A PNG renamed to .jpg still fails
Check the size against the limit for that slot, not the general image limit — a 5 MB logo fails even though images allow 15 MB
For video, MP4 is the safest choice
