Editing a protocol

Learn how to duplicate and edit an existing protocol

Updated over 3 weeks ago

This document outlines the process of duplicating a protocol, allowing for edits and modifications while preserving the original protocol. Duplicating creates a copy of an existing protocol. This allows you to modify the duplicated protocol without affecting the original. Any visible protocol can be duplicated, regardless of authorship.

Duplicating a protocol

  1. Access the Protocol: Navigate to the protocol you wish to duplicate in the protocol list page. This can be a protocol authored by yourself or a colleague.

  2. Open the menu: Click on the kebab menu (three vertical dots) located on the far right side of the protocol entry.

  3. Select Duplicate: From the dropdown menu, choose the "Duplicate" option. This action will create a copy of the protocol, which will be labeled as "Copy of [Original Protocol Name]".

  4. Edit the Duplicated Protocol:

    • Add or remove steps.

    • Add or remove input and output parameters from steps.

    • Edit the underlying workflow of the protocol. Learn more here.

    • Edit name labels for steps or parameters and/or change descriptions.

    • Update the protocol name to reflect your version.

    • Add tags for organization.

  5. Publish the Duplicated Protocol: Choose to publish the protocol for personal use or for broader access. Confirm the publication.

After publishing, the original protocol remains unchanged, while the duplicated protocol reflects all edits made. You can verify the changes by accessing the new protocol, where the updates will be visible. Duplicating workflows is a straightforward process that enables you to create customized versions of protocols while keeping the originals intact. This feature is especially useful for testing or modifying existing workflows without risk to the original content.
