How do I test a workflow?

Verify workflow behavior before releasing changes to production users.

Answer

Test workflows in a Demonstration / UAT site before publishing to production. This lets you confirm the workflow behaves as expected without affecting live users.

If the workflow was published within the last 24 hours and you were already signed in to Frontline Operations (ANVL Workflows), you must sign out and sign back in to see the latest version. You do not need to sign out of ANVL Insights.

Steps

Before you begin

  1. Confirm the workflow has already been published to a Demonstration / UAT site.

  2. Make sure you are testing in UAT, not in Production.

Access the workflow in UAT

  1. Sign in to Frontline Operations (ANVL Workflows).

  2. If you were already signed in and the workflow was published in the last 12 hours, sign out and sign back in.

  3. Access your Demonstration / UAT site.

  4. If your organization uses Work Folders, open the Demonstration folder. If needed, create one.

  5. If your organization uses a workflow-first experience, select the Demonstration site from Groups.

  6. Select Start Workflow.

  7. Open the workflow you want to test.

Complete the workflow end to end

  1. Complete the workflow from start to finish.

  2. Check that:

    • questions appear in the expected order

    • wording is clear

    • spelling is correct

    • response options make sense

    • rule-based paths trigger correctly

    • Stops and Interventions appear when expected

  3. Repeat the workflow as needed to test different paths.

Validate the completed workflow in ANVL Workflows

  1. After submitting, stay in ANVL Mobile App or ANVL Workflows.

  2. Confirm the workflow shows as Completed.

  3. Look for the blue circle indicating completion.

  4. Open the completed workflow.

  5. Verify:

    • all responses are visible

    • responses appear under the correct categories

    • categories are in a logical order

    • answers reflect what was entered

Test the Notes experience

  1. Select Add Note.

  2. Complete the note questions.

  3. Save the note.

  4. Confirm:

    • the note questions appear as expected

    • the note is added to the workflow

    • the note appears under the correct category

Validate Stops and Interventions in ANVL Insights

  1. Open ANVL Insights.

  2. Go to Live Feed.

  3. Find the workflow you just completed.

  4. Open the workflow.

  5. Confirm any Stops or Interventions match the workflow design and expected behavior.

Retest if needed

  1. If you find issues, update the workflow.

  2. Re-publish it to Demonstration / UAT.

  3. Test again before moving to production.

Helpful notes

  • Test more than one path, including normal paths and edge cases.

  • Test at least one Stop or Intervention scenario when those are part of the workflow.

  • If the workflow uses custom scoring, include scoring validation in your testing.

  • Never skip testing before publishing to production.
