Using voice-to-text functionality on your mobile devices can make entering free text responses in Anvl quick and easy. This guide will walk you through enabling and using voice-to-text on different types of devices.

What is "Dictation"?

You may find the voice-to-text feature labeled as "Dictation" in your device settings, as these terms are used interchangeably.

1. iOS Devices (iPhone and iPad)

Enabling Voice to Text

  1. Ensure Siri is Enabled: Voice-to-text requires Siri to be enabled.

    • Go to Settings > Siri & Search.

    • Turn on Listen for "Hey Siri" and Press Side Button for Siri.

  2. Enable Dictation:

    • Go to Settings > General > Keyboard.

    • Toggle on Enable Dictation.

Using Voice to Text

  1. Open the Anvl App and navigate to the free text response field.

  2. Tap the text box to open the keyboard.

  3. Tap the microphone icon on the keyboard.

  4. Speak your response clearly into your device.

  5. Tap Done or wait for the dictation to stop automatically.

  6. Review and edit the text if necessary before submitting your response.

2. Android Devices (Generic)

Enabling Voice to Text

  1. Check Google Voice Typing:

    • Go to Settings > System > Languages & Input (or Language & Keyboard depending on your device).

    • Select On-screen Keyboard or Virtual Keyboard.

    • Ensure Google Voice Typing is enabled.

  2. Language Settings:

    • Go to Settings > System > Languages & Input > Google Voice Typing > Voice Match.

    • Enable Access with Voice Match and set up Voice Model if prompted.

Using Voice to Text

  1. Open the Anvl App and go to the free text response field.

  2. Tap the text box to bring up the keyboard.

  3. Tap the microphone icon on the keyboard.

  4. Speak your response clearly and steadily.

  5. Tap Done or wait for the dictation to complete.

  6. Check and edit the transcribed text if needed before submitting.

3. Samsung Devices

Samsung devices offer both "Samsung Keyboard Voice Input" and "Google Voice Typing" for voice-to-text functionality. You can choose between these options based on your preference.

Enabling and Using Voice to Text

  1. Open the Anvl App and navigate to the free text response field.

  2. Tap the text box to open the keyboard.

  3. Depending on your device's settings, you may see either a microphone icon associated with "Samsung Keyboard Voice Input" or "Google Voice Typing." Tap the icon.

  4. Speak your response clearly into your device.

  5. Tap Done or wait for the dictation to stop automatically.

  6. Review and edit the text if necessary before submitting your response.

Selecting Your Preferred Voice Input Method

  1. Go to Settings > General Management > Language and Input.

  2. Select On-screen Keyboard or Virtual Keyboard.

  3. Choose Samsung Keyboard or Google Voice Typing as your preferred input method.

4. Windows Tablets/Surface Devices

Enabling Voice to Text

  1. Set Up Speech Recognition:

    • Go to Settings > Time & Language > Speech.

    • Click Get Started under Microphone to set up your microphone for dictation.

  2. Enable Online Speech Recognition:

    • Go to Settings > Privacy > Speech, inking & typing.

    • Enable Get to know me.

Using Voice to Text

  1. Open the Anvl App and select the free text response area.

  2. Tap the text field to open the keyboard.

  3. Tap the microphone icon on the on-screen keyboard or use the Windows + H shortcut to start dictation.

  4. Speak your response clearly.

  5. Use voice commands like "stop dictation" or manually stop using the microphone icon.

  6. Review and make any necessary corrections before submitting.

5. Additional Tips for All Devices

  • Speak clearly and at a moderate pace for better accuracy.

  • Avoid background noise to prevent misinterpretation.

  • Review the text after dictation to correct any errors.
