How Driving Metrics Are Calculated?

Applause Scorecards centralizes driving-related performance metrics, pulled directly from your fleet management software, into a single, clear view of technician driving performance.

Driving scores and related metrics are based on what is supported by the integration of the fleet sofware that you use.

All metrics will automatically update daily through your fleet integration to provide month over month insights. Applause organizes and displays the data, without altering or recalculating the source information.

Driving Days

Total number of days where we received driving data.

Driving Score

This metric pulls the driving safety score from the business's connected fleet software for an employee during the current month.

Acceleration Score & Count

Each hard acceleration event receives a 0–100 score based on severity, time of day, and weather conditions. The overall score is calculated by summing all event scores and normalizing them against total miles driven.

Braking Score & Count

Each braking event receives a 0–100 score based on severity, time of day, and weather conditions. The overall braking score is calculated in the same way as acceleration.

Cornering Score

Generated based on factors including speed of the vehicle, vehicle class, and spatio temporal index.

Distracted Driving Score & Count

Based on phone usage duration, speed of vehicle, and spatio temporal index.

Idling Score

Idling scores are based on the percentage of time a driver spends idling during trips, adjusted for relative miles driven, with 21% idling equal to a score of 70.

Seatbelt Score & Count

Based on the percentage of seatbelt usage of drivers.

Speeding Score

Based on how fast and how long the driver exceeded the speed limit, time of day, and weather conditions. The overall speeding score calculated by totaling all event scores and adjusting for relative miles driven.

Harsh Acceleration

Reflects events when a vehicle accelerates with a sudden increase of 16+ mph within 2 seconds.

Harsh Braking

Reflects events where a vehicle rapidly decelerated, which may indicate unsafe or aggressive driving behavior.

Harsh Turning

This metric reflects sharp or abrupt turns that may indicate unsafe cornering or high-speed maneuvers.

Excessive Speeding

Captures more severe speeding events where the vehicle exceeds the posted limit by a large margin (e.g., 20+ mph over). A perfect score is 100%

Cell Phone Usage & Count

Events where cell phone usage was detected.

Driver Facing Cam Obstruction Count

Number of events where detection of an obstruction that blocks the camera's field of view.

Moderation & Severe Acceleration

Captures instances of acceleration that are classified as moderate and severe.

Moderate & Severe Hard Braking

Reflects deceleration events that are classified as moderate and severe.

Moderate & Severe Cornering Score

Captures aggressive cornering events, which may indicate unsafe driving during turns.

Drowsy Driving Count

Detection of a driver that appears fatigued or unaware while driving.
